And we still cannot seem to get an honest and actual ship date from our Hardcover Printer. That said, they have called me several times with progress reports, so I am feeling pretty good about shipping next week. (Sheesh, now I know how Charlie Brown feels about Lucy and that football.) So the good news is we “should” have these new hardcovers in the warehouse next Wednesday. That’s what these people are promising as of this morning, and they seem sincere and actually getting the job finally done. As soon as they arrive at the warehouse we will ship all pre-orders. See complete descriptions of these two cool books elsewhere in this Update. We will keep you posted.

UPDATE: Enough is enough. We are probably going to stop using this unreliable printing company, as their constant baloney is giving me an ulcer and a migraine. That “may” mean an end to the hardcovers. We have plenty in stock of most of them to last several months, but unless we can find an alternative hardcover printer able to produce quality books at reasonable prices, this may put an end to the special hardcover editions of our core RPGs.

We have been looking for alternatives, but at this time, the printing industry remains in turmoil and things seem to be getting worse rather than improving. All publishers are experiencing unexpected supply chain shortages, insane delays, and skyrocketing paper/printing prices. I do not know how much longer Palladium can hold the line on price. Thankfully, astute planning and a little luck has put us in a better position than many (even on the hardcover front). Fingers crossed and working hard on writing and releasing new books, Open House logistics, Gen Con plans, and, well, everything else. Alex and I are busy investigating leads and getting quotes on all fronts from web to digital printing. Keep the faith and stay frosty. We are on top of it.

NEWS! Palladium Open House (POH) is definitely happening – April 22-24, 2022 – April 21 if you are coming in for VIP Thursday (mid-afternoon and evening). Meet dozens of Palladium creators. Game with the people who make the games you love. And this year is more special than ever because we are celebrating Palladium’s 40 Year Anniversary. Palladium actually turned 40 last year, which is why the POH was originally scheduled for 2021, but the pandemic caused us to reschedule. Nothing is going to stop the overdue celebration this year. I’m looking to have some fun, how about you?

We are not requiring proof of vaccination for the POH, but we highly recommend getting vaccinated. We will require everyone attending to wear face masks. Happy to report that, just as we had hoped, Covid cases are already starting to plummet in Michigan and across the country so we should be pretty safe by April, especially inside the spacious and airy Palladium warehouse.

Get your POH admission tickets now while they remain available. Palladium’s warehouse can only hold so many people to begin with and with Covid safety considerations, we will be strictly limiting attendance this year. I think we can accommodate another 100 people or so, and that will be it. VIP Thursday is nearly sold out now. We cannot wait to see many of our old friends and make new ones. More POH info and details to come.

NEWS! Palladium at Gen Con 2022 – Palladium will also have a booth at Gen Con this year. So if you are attending please swing on over to check out all the hardcover editions and new releases we expect to have available. Wayne, Crystal, and I will be manning the booth, along with helpers and writers like Mark Oberle, Glen Evans, and a few others. And if we can swing it, maybe a guest artist.

Gen Con 2022 Palladium Gaming Events. Jeff “NMI” Ruiz and Cameron Cleveland have been dealing with non-Covid health issues of their own, and we have been short-handed and swamped dealing with product creation, Covid, and supply chain issues, so there are no coordinated Palladium gaming events for Gen Con this year. Sorry. HOWEVER, I believe there is still time for you to sign–up and register games as an individual Game Master. The more Palladium based game events, the better, and we are happy to support G.M.s as best we can with our usual range of discount coupons and such. Please do not hesitate to reach out.

Available now: One-of-a-kind book negatives. Negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House and Gen Con. Truly unique, attractive, and fun.

Negatives are unique and attractive, one-of-a-kind (on rare occasions two-of-a-kind if a page or section of pages were replaced or a second edition was made) works of art that resemble woodcut art and are very dynamic conversation pieces. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. The plastic film negatives were then “ganged” on a massive sheet of Mylar 16 pages per big sheet, and the printing plates were made from the negatives – everything white, printing black.

When our printer, McNaughton and Gunn was going to discard them, Palladium acquired many (not all) of the old negatives. I am only keeping a few books for myself and make majority of the rest available to you. I sign each negative in silver and each comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The negative comes on a white board inside a plastic magazine bag and looks fabulous framed! Fits in an 8×10 inch matt opening in a frame (each neg is roughly 8½ x 11 inches). Closing Thoughts

These are frustrating times for us all. I, for one, am sick and tired of the pandemic and all the crap that comes with it, especially rising prices, supply chain issues, and printing concerns. That’s why we are getting revved up for the Palladium Open House in April. I hope you are too. It is time to have some damn fun, see old friends, make new ones, and have a blast gaming for 3-4 days. I hope a number of you can make it. There are still a hundred or so weekend admissions available, but they are starting to go fast.

In addition to the usual games, panel talks, debuts of new products and specialty items at the POH, I think the Live Auction, Saturday evening, is going to be stellar. I mean, it is our 40 Year Anniversary, and I want to pull out all the stops! I have dug out a lot of rare, out of print, first printings of signed books, hardcovers, original artwork, proofreader photocopies of books like early TMNT® sourcebooks, Robotech®, Palladium Fantasy®, Rifts®, etc., all signed by me and the crew. A few items signed by Erick. You know, stuff I think folks will go crazy over and love to own. I am even debating whether or not to make some of my 1979 and 1980s Judges Guild D&D artwork available. I unearthed a pile of it and am trying to get it evaluated now. It might be too pricy for the POH and I don’t know if you would even be interested in D&D/Judges Guild art.

Closing Thoughts

And now for some news and updates …

Shipping the end of January?! Splicers® RPG “Bonus” Edition Hardcover (with 50 pages of extra material gathered from The Rifter®) and “Original” Palladium Fantasy “Bonus” Commemorative Hardcover (1st Edition Rules and includes Tombs of Gersidi and the first Fantasy sourcebook: The Arms of Nargash-Tor). I make this announcement with a bit of trepidation as our hardcover printer has been notoriously unreliable even when they have assured us of ship dates in the past. That said, they tell us that the Splicers® and Palladium Fantasy Bonus Edition Hardcovers will be delivered by the end of January and seem rather definite and cheerful about it. Fingers crossed. Our thanks to those of you who have ordered and been patiently waiting for them to ship. See details below.

UPDATE: Printing. I wish the good news about the hardcovers meant the printing crisis is coming to an end, but no such luck. We are still experiencing delays and much longer than normal turnaround times for offset printing than we have ever seen in our 40 year history, but we are working around these challenges the best we can. We are even experiencing shortages and substitutions with the shipping boxes we purchase. Shortages and paper substitutions for books often mean higher prices and we are trying to hold the line on the cost of our books for you while maintaining our high quality. Palladium has four printers we are using depending on our needs and their availability, and we are investigating a few additional printers. We are finding ourselves sending books in for reprint weeks and months in advance to make sure we keep titles in stock. That messes with our cash flow, but we want our books available to you whenever you want them. In fact, I have quote requests and inquiries at our current and a few new printers right now.

UPDATE: Cleaning House. We have been “cleaning house” on a few levels as we gear up for a productive year. That includes physical cleaning and reorganizing the warehouse and offices. This is in part preparation for the Palladium Open House in April, and to get ourselves physically and mentally prepared for the beginning of a new era at Palladium Books. A lot of “stuff” has piled up in every nook and cranny over the years and it is time to get organized and back into a lean, mean, game producing machine. We have been sorting through and throwing out bag after bag of trash, and categorizing and filing away the rest. No box or pile of papers has been spared. No small undertaking but definitely necessary. What is cool about it is this cleaning purge is a visual accomplishment that makes everyone feel productive, positive, and raring to get into the work of creating. For those of you attending the POH, there is good news in that we have unearthed some rare treasures to put into the Live Auction.

Among the fun surprises I will not be selling (sorry) are a bunch of my ancient notes and maps from my original Defilers Fantasy campaign (1979-1983), including the Land of Damned and the Citadel, Erick Wujcik’s notes on Dragonwright, his first draft of Tombs of Gersidi, and even some of my old Palladium Fantasy RPG® and Mechanoid Invasion® original artwork! I also found two dozen of my colored pages from Noble Comics’ Justice Machine and Cobalt Blue #5. I was the colorist/painter, a pinch-hit inker, and concept guy for the comic books.

My dear friend and publisher at the time, Michael Gustovich, was a big fan of The Mechanoid Invasion Trilogy®, prompting him to license and include them (out of scale but there in all their glory) as the big bad guys in Cobalt Blue #5. So for you crazy collectors, the first comic book appearance of The Mechanoids® was in the pages of Cobalt Blue/Justice Machine #5 (we’ll have some at the Open House). The episode was even entitled “Invasion of the Mechanoids!” The art is by guys who would go on to become comic book legends like Bill Reinhold (penciler) and Bob Layton (inker, who would, years later, revitalize Iron Man for Marvel), as well as Jeff Dee (inker) and Mike Gustovich (writer and inker). Painted by me. The full color process for the comics was not what we had hoped for and the art printed in muted, dull colors compared to the crisp, original painted colored pages. Crystal (Palladium’s warehouse person) and Alex were blown away by the vibrant colors and hand-painted detail of my painted pages. That was nice for me because she and Alex were quite impressed to the point that I think I actually blushed. I had forgotten how good I was at painting with Doctor Martin dyes and watercolor paint way back when. I might have to dabble in painting again sometime.

The discovery of these pages brought back fond memories of hanging out at the Noble Comics bullpen with guys like Bill Willingham (creator of The Elementals and DC’s Fables), Jeff Dee (the creator of one of the first superhero RPGs, Villains & Vigilantes), Bill Reinhold, Mike and others in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A shame Noble Comics (1982 and 1983) didn’t get off the ground. Sadly, it was a few years ahead of the independent comic book boom that would catch fire in the mid/late 1980s and early 1990s with Ninja Turtles, Image Comics, Dark Horse, and others.

UPDATE: Rifts® CS Manhunters. I am taking care of some business matters and clearing my plate so I can write my heart out. As soon as I am finished with this title, I will happily move on to the next, and the next. It is time to become that writing machine again.

UPDATE: The Rifter® #85 Annual. This is Sean’s baby, and will be a dynamic and diverse, 224 page issue.

UPDATE: What’s next: The BTS sourcebook Creature Feature, Rifts® Titan Robotics, Rifts® Bestiary Volume 2, and Rifts® Antarctica, not necessarily in that order, but probably. We also have several Palladium Fantasy titles and a bunch of other books in the pipeline and in development.

I have never felt sharper and more focused. Why now? There are several reasons. One is you and the positive feedback we have gotten from you over the past several months about the Surprise Packages, hardcovers, and upcoming releases, as well as excitement about Sean Roberson joining the team. Another is that I am highly motivated to help you stay positive and occupied during these troubling times by putting new games and sourcebooks into your hands. Product that will excite and enthrall you, and bring you a little escape and enjoyment. Otherwise, I think my head and heart are just in a good place. All manner of things are falling into place and finally coming together behind the scenes. All of the above has renewed my creative energy and excitement about the future. The presence of Sean Roberson and his unbridled enthusiasm helps too. As does the input and hard work of Wayne, Alex, Crystal, and the entire Palladium crew. All of it motivates me. We feel inspired and positive despite the rise of Covid everywhere, supply chain issues, and other garbage in the world. We hope our positivity and excitement is contagious and infects you with fun and inspires you to game and stretch your own imaginations, especially as new product begins to hit the shelves. Good stuff, too.

Our new policy of not announcing new products and tentative release dates prohibits me from going into details at this time. But you know what, I think that is also helping to motivate me to get these books finished and into your hands! I am dying to share them with you as soon as possible.

Where we’ve been and where we are going

I’m not one to reminisce a lot about the past. My head is usually in the present and looking toward the future, so I’m already looking forward.

2021 and 2020 were, of course, very notable for Palladium. Not just because of the pandemic, though it has had a profound impact on all of our lives, but for the transformation that has been taking place behind the scenes. Life can be hard. A war of attrition that wears you down. I bet a lot of you are feeling a bit worn out right now, but please don’t give up. Find life’s little pleasures and beauty, stay positive and game on. There was a time, not too long ago, when I felt worn out, beaten up, and knocked down. Worse, it seemed every time I tried to get up, I was kicked in the teeth. It is hard to be creative or do anything when you feel like that. It is difficult not to just give up and call it quits. Only, I don’t quit. I think, find hope, plan and heal, and get back up. Enough was enough. It was time to pick myself up, make Palladium strong again, and …

… then the pandemic struck.

Distributors went MIA and fear and uncertainty swept the whole world. Everything changed, yet, somehow, the unprecedented challenges we faced awakened something inside of me. It was a renewed sense of purpose and energy that manifested as a powerful driving force filled with ideas. It strengthened my resolve and I actually felt excited and hopeful. That awakened force helped me face the challenges with a sharp mind and I found ways to adapt and thrive. It made me hungry to triumph against a parade of unknown forces. I found myself motivated to be resourceful and think outside the box. Not only that, it was time to double-down on the work to rebuild and grow Palladium Books. (By the way, one of my super-powers seems to be figuring out ways to pivot and survive against impossible odds.)

I was disappointed when someone close to me asked if I really thought Palladium could survive this. It was clear he did not believe we could. That shocked and saddened me deeply, but it also magnified my determination and sent the problem-solving part of my imagination into overdrive.

Every new challenge sparked excitement and ideas on how to overcome it. Instead of falling into despair, I felt alive and driven to succeed. I saw and seized upon new opportunities to grow when others seemed to see barriers or defeat. When I realized others around me were afraid, sad, and struggling, I tried to be a voice of calm, positivity, and encouragement here at the office and in these Weekly Updates. Much of 2020 I was here at the office, alone, but I think that quiet and solitude helped me galvanize my ideas and keep me forming plans and moving forward.

If 2020 was a year of pivoting, resolve, and creative business strategies, 2021 was a year of manifest destiny. We quickly reached out to new printers to build an alternating supply chain long before most other companies. I listened to you and trusted you and my gut to take a number of calculated risks. The hardcover editions of our core rule books were one of them. Exploring other alternative shipping and printing options were two others. Each success energized me and reminded me of who I was, what I had accomplished over the years, and all I still want to achieve. Not just for me, but for you. To help keep you – our customers, friends, and extended family – hopeful, creative, and going strong. That only seemed fair since all of your positive feedback feeds my own heart and mind to keep me positive and creative.

On one hand, 2021 was full of hard work and long hours. On the other, it was a year of magic and hope. One thing after another seemed to fall into place at the most opportune times like the pieces of a puzzle. There were many occasions when it felt as if the hand of Fate or God or Guardian Angels (Erick? Mom? Dad?) were answering my prayers and/or showing me the way. I know that probably sounds corny or melodramatic, but that’s how it felt. Still does. As I continued to put my plans into place to rebuild and grow Palladium Books, things large and small seemed to manifest to move those plans forward. It was profound and magical. Some were small risks and little triumphs, others were huge. All of them exhilarating and beneficial. That includes my being approached and accepted into an elite business program, hiring Crystal Willard to take over Palladium’s warehouse operations, and Sean Owen Roberson accepting my offer to join Palladium Books as my Creative Director and business partner. I have to tell you I don’t know if I have ever felt so driven, busy, exhausted, and exhilarated on a daily basis in my entire life. That is especially true of the last half of 2021. But it has all been so worthwhile and will pay dividends for years to come.

What Sean brings to Palladium is another brilliant lunatic who thinks big, shares my love and vision for Palladium’s I.P.s (intellectual properties), and is right here with me reaching for the stars. When I present an idea, it is never too big or too wild for Sean. He doesn’t say, “Okay, that sounds good,” or “that sounds crazy,” or “I don’t get it.” No, he embraces the possibilities, thinks about it, and starts asking questions and offering suggestions on how make it happen and how to make it better, bigger, or more thrilling for you. I’m happy to say, I do the same for him with his ideas. We are a pair of dynamos working toward the same goals. We both want to see Palladium reach new heights and to wow you every step of the way. And no, we do not have any desire to sell out to a larger company. We don’t need to when we have tens of thousands of you behind us. You put the wind in our sails and support our efforts, so keep talking Palladium up, enjoy our games, and support the bold new products headed your way.

There is this pervasive sense of wonder, excitement, and a new beginning fueled by a belief that we can accomplish anything when we put our heads to it. And there is so much we want to accomplish. So much we want to wow you with.

I have not experienced this magnitude of creative synergy and collaboration since my days working with Erick Wujcik. In that relationship, Erick and I fed each other’s ideas and supported, challenged, and empowered each other to be bold, think big, and go where no one had gone before. We understood each other on an unparalleled level that no one else could touch. I am now twice blessed, because that’s what I have again with Sean Owen Roberson, and that’s a two-way street. Our creativity is off the chart. Add Wayne, Alex, Julius, Kathy, Crystal, Rex, and a host of Palladium freelance writers and artists into the mix, and we are feeling unstoppable.

Big ideas and realistic expectations. For you, that means the release of many of the books you have been waiting for, and maybe a few surprises, throughout the year. Though our focus will be on books and the creative, we will also be continuing to rebuild Palladium’s foundation and move forward from behind the scenes. Not to mention a Palladium Open House in April and a return to Gen Con.

We have your back, just as we know you have ours. You probably do not realize how much knowing you are there for us inspires and drives our creativity. Thank you for your love and support. We’ll get through these crazy pandemic years together and be better, stronger people (and company) for it.

So, Happy New Year! Stand strong. Be proud. Be hopeful and positive. Uncork those imaginations and find unity and joy through gaming. Don’t ever forget gamers are among the most creative and imaginative people in the world. Our brains are wired to see the infinite possibilities. Choose the good and encouraging ones. Closing Thoughts

I see a lot of people feeling increasingly sad, depressed, and/or angry about the new, fast spreading Omicron Covid virus and all the issues that come with it. Please don’t lose hope. [Thank you for your kind words and concern, D.N. First, though Covid-19 variants are spreading across the country, we are hoping Michigan has seen the worst of it, and will have low case counts by the spring. Moreover, everyone is praying the POH will happen this April, us included. I think we all need a fun event like the POH, so we are still planning to host it in April 21-24, 2022. Hopefully nothing changes that. Second, as for Rifts® Bestiary Vol. 2, yeah, the pandemic played havoc with production in 2020 and 2021, but Sean and I are hell bent on getting it and other titles people have been waiting for released throughout 2022. The Rifter® #85 Annual, BTS Creature Feature, Rifts® CS Manhunters, Titan Robotics, and Rifts® Bestiary 2 are all at the top of that list. Barring the unexpected, 2022 should be the start of an illustrious and productive new beginning for Palladium. I have spent much of the last two years laying the groundwork to make Palladium strong and productive again. – Kevin]
