Update: Titan Robotics Kickstarter

Howdy Rifters, I have bad news and good news. As I have mentioned in previous updates, shipping fulfillment is one of those things Kevin and I have been nervous about with the volatile worldwide logistics situation.

After coordinating closely with our shipping partners Quartermaster Logistics since November 2022, providing them with rock-solid shipping projections, and sharing their quoted prices with you, it turns out they cannot fulfill shipping for you at anywhere near those rates. They made no effort to fix the situation. That is the bad news, and trust me, as unhappy as you may be to hear this, you are not as unhappy as Kevin and I are.

The good news! It took some scrambling and long hours on our part, but we have arranged a new fulfilment partner to provide you shipping at comparable rates, and fulfillment is only being shortly delayed. Shipping will be charged in the next few business days. As you know, we have received all physical rewards at the Palladium Books warehouse and are a good way through boxing everything up. It’s a LOT of books and items and they look great.

Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store

I am adding new collectibles and Palladium negatives over the next several weeks, so check ‘em out. Alex and I will try to post new items on a regular basis, so check in every week or so to see what’s new.

One-of-a-kind Palladium Books negatives (special and rare collectibles). Negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House, Gen Con, and conventions, and are catching on as rare collectibles, unique in and of themselves. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. The plastic film negatives were then “ganged” on a massive sheet of Mylar, 16 pages per big sheet, and the printing plates were made from the negatives – everything white, printing black. We have been cutting them loose and making them available to you. I am only keeping a few dozen pages of negatives and a few complete books for myself, the rest are all being slowly offered to you, in no particular order.

• Each is truly unique, attractive, and fun to have.
• Own a piece of Palladium Books and RPG history you will treasure.
• Each was used to print the very book you may have in your collection (1981-2004).
• Each signed in silver ink by Kevin Siembieda, the founder and owner of Palladium Books. He is also the game designer and often the author or co-author of the book from which the negative originates. And some negatives bear his artwork.
• Each signed negative comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
• Each signed negative is a one-of-a-kind work of art (on rare occasions, two-of-a-kind if a page or section of pages were replaced or a second edition was made) that resembles woodcut art, and a very dynamic conversation piece.
• Each signed negative is on a white board inside a clear plastic bag.
• Negatives looks fabulous matted or framed! Fits in an 8×10 inch matt opening. Each neg is roughly 8½ x 11 inches.
• Prices vary depending on the title, the art, and quality of the negative. Note: Many have scratches, or blemishes, and/or an opaque medium on the negative. Still, they look great and are a piece of RPG history. We recommend you carefully examine the photographs of each item to avoid disappointment.
• We have been making the negatives available, in no particular order, for a number of years, and will continue to do so. However, cutting them loose, signing and bagging is a time consuming process.
• Note: The negatives from the TMNT RPG, TMNT Adventures, and some Rifts® titles are already sold out. Moreover, the negatives from many titles were destroyed, so when you see one you like, get it when you can. Enjoy.

Original art – My Ebay store is one of the few places where you can find original artwork by me (Kevin Siembieda), Kevin Long, Charles Walton, and others, as well as one-of-a-kind negatives from classic Palladium books (they look awesome framed), and other Palladium memorabilia. Closing Thoughts – Fun and Laughter

I don’t know about you, but I like to break up my serious RPG games with fun and laughter. It might be part of the game woven into my description of a character or event, or a G.M. comment or joke as a side comment. It doesn’t matter, as long as there is some levity and even downright silliness to break up the heavy drama. Most Marvel movies do that exceptionally well. Gentle moments are nice too, like when Spider-Man returned from oblivion meets Tony Stark/Iron Man on the battlefield in Avengers Endgame. The two stop and hug each other in a surrogate father and son moment that is beautiful, followed by a touch of levity when Spidey says, “This is nice.”

As Game Master, I will sometimes pause the action to compliment a player on a brilliant or heroic maneuver or a great roll or shocking bit of luck. “Yep, your life was passing before your eyes, and then your puny little scholar teammate ROLLS A NATURAL TWENTY to take down the bad guy who was about to kill you. By the way, nice shot, Tex, make sure so and so buys your character a meal and a drink when this is over. Well, assuming you all survive, because the battle is far from over.” And then I dive back into the action. The point is to have a nice moment to briefly pause and let the players catch their breath, and make people smile or laugh before we jump back into deadly action.

Remember, role-playing should be about having fun, usually with friends and family. Let your hair down, try new things, be silly or funny at times, and have a blast.

If I have a complaint about Walking Dead: Dead City, and the last few seasons of Walking Dead, it’s that everything is super-serious and grim. My goodness, I don’t think Maggie has smiled in years in that show. She is so sad, serious and ruthless that it’s hard to watch. And it is not how we human beings are. Throughout human history we use levity to survive the grim times and sad moments. The last several years of my Mom’s life were spent fighting a losing battle with cancer. It’s sad and tragic to watch the person you adore slipping away before your eyes, but we laughed so much. I loved making my mother laugh and forget about her battle (all of our battle) even if it were for just a minute. It is what helped us all get through those tough times. Same thing during the Crisis of Treachery and other tough times. I made the whole staff laugh and lighten up with comments like, “They’ll need to pound a stake through my heart to kill Palladium. And that ain’t happening.”

Laughter is what helps us humans get through hard times and sadness. As we have been dealing with the unexpected global shipping issues for Titan Robotics, we were all exhausted and frustrated and the situation uncertain, when I said something (I don’t remember what) that made everyone burst into laughter. Leading to hugs and Sean, still chuckling, to say, “I love you, Man.” We laugh all the time at Palladium. To the point that I’ll grin and paraphrase a line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail: “ Palladium Books, it’s a silly place.” Ahem.

Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store

I am adding new collectibles and Palladium negatives over the next several weeks, so check ‘em out. Alex and I will try to post new items on a regular basis, so check in every week or so to see what’s new.

One-of-a-kind Palladium Books negatives (special and rare collectibles). Negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House, Gen Con, and conventions, and are catching on as rare collectibles, unique in and of themselves. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. The plastic film negatives were then “ganged” on a massive sheet of Mylar, 16 pages per big sheet, and the printing plates were made from the negatives – everything white, printing black. We have been cutting them loose and making them available to you. I am only keeping a few dozen pages of negatives and a few complete books for myself, the rest are all being slowly offered to you, in no particular order.

• Each is truly unique, attractive, and fun to have.
• Own a piece of Palladium Books and RPG history you will treasure.
• Each was used to print the very book you may have in your collection (1981-2004).
• Each signed in silver ink by Kevin Siembieda, the founder and owner of Palladium Books. He is also the game designer and often the author or co-author of the book from which the negative originates. And some negatives bear his artwork.
• Each signed negative comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
• Each signed negative is a one-of-a-kind work of art (on rare occasions, two-of-a-kind if a page or section of pages were replaced or a second edition was made) that resembles woodcut art, and a very dynamic conversation piece.
• Each signed negative is on a white board inside a clear plastic bag.
• Negatives looks fabulous matted or framed! Fits in an 8×10 inch matt opening. Each neg is roughly 8½ x 11 inches.
• Prices vary depending on the title, the art, and quality of the negative. Note: Many have scratches, or blemishes, and/or an opaque medium on the negative. Still, they look great and are a piece of RPG history. We recommend you carefully examine the photographs of each item to avoid disappointment.
• We have been making the negatives available, in no particular order, for a number of years, and will continue to do so. However, cutting them loose, signing and bagging is a time consuming process.
• Note: The negatives from the TMNT RPG, TMNT Adventures, and some Rifts® titles are already sold out. Moreover, the negatives from many titles were destroyed, so when you see one you like, get it when you can. Enjoy.

Original art – My Ebay store is one of the few places where you can find original artwork by me (Kevin Siembieda), Kevin Long, Charles Walton, and others, as well as one-of-a-kind negatives from classic Palladium books (they look awesome framed), and other Palladium memorabilia. Some are concept sketches, others are finished works of art, as well as a selection of prints and posters.

Closing Thoughts – RPG joy

Dang, we love role-playing games! There ain’t nothin’ like ‘em. Making RPGs and bringing you the games and sourcebooks you want is our number one goal. We’ve pushed a lot of other stuff off our plates and we are laser focused on making books. We love the medium, love what we do, and are having a blast working on upcoming releases.

A lot of professionals will say they love what they do, but it’s absolutely true at Palladium Books. Even when Sean or I are tired or frustrated or feeling under the weather, we enjoy coming to work to weave some magic and write. Just the other day Sean was saying how his move to Palladium was absolutely correct for him. That he loves coming to work. Loves writing and publishing, and that it brings him joy. Moreover, every accomplishment, large or small, only brings more excitement and joy.

I know that feeling well, because I feel exactly the same. Always have. It is a strangely magical experience to create something out of thin air via your imagination. To weave books and games that generations of gamers have enjoyed. Part of the joy and magic comes from working with other talented people – writing partners, freelance artists and writers, and Palladium fans. All people who challenge and inspire us creators to push the envelope and take our work to the next level.

Sean and I often find ourselves in a state of happiness and excitement even when locked away in our offices pounding away on the keyboard, especially after we’ve just inspired each other about something. Every new idea, every time we find the best words to convey that idea, a suggestion to make the ideas (or book) better or expanded, is a joyful and exciting moment.

And fun. Yes, it is work being a wordsmith and game designer, but it’s fun. As much fun as playing a game! We have fun being creative and writing and creating new stories. There’s a sense of playfulness and momentum and achievement for us that is almost undefinable. There are moments when you just stop and cheer or lean back in your chair and think to yourself: “That’s it!” “I love it.” “The fans will love it!” “Perfect.” “Fantastic.” And then you thank God for blessing you with one great idea after another, and for your many talents. There are days that I wonder why I have been so blessed with so many gifts and extraordinary friends and talents like Sean and Wayne and Rex and all our writers and artists and insightful fans. Some days I’m astonished by everything we’ve accomplished these past 42 years and thrilled about all the great game material Sean and I have planned for the future.

There are moments every week where Sean turns to me and says something like, “Kevin, I’m so glad to be here. I love working with you.” Or, “Man, we make a great team. I mean it. People have no idea what’s coming.” And I make similar exclamations about him, or to Wayne, or Alex, etc.

In the end, our sense of fun and love for creating role-playing games is why we have RPGs and sourcebooks that are 20-40 years old and still selling; because all that love, excitement, and fun seeps into every page. Freakin’ awesome, right? Our other secret? Me, Sean, all of us, we’re fan boy gamers just like you and we create the kinds of games we know you want to see and that we love to play ourselves.

You will continue to see all kinds of exciting books and even new products coming your way in the near future and in the months to come. Because we have been breaking our backs behind the scenes and having a ton of fun while doing so, which translates into dynamic products that will blow your minds. Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store

I am adding new collectibles and Palladium negatives over the next several weeks, so check ‘em out. Alex and I will try to post new items on a regular basis, so check in every week or so to see what’s new.

One-of-a-kind Palladium Books negatives (special and rare collectibles). Negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House, Gen Con, and conventions, and are catching on as rare collectibles, unique in and of themselves. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. The plastic film negatives were then “ganged” on a massive sheet of Mylar, 16 pages per big sheet, and the printing plates were made from the negatives – everything white, printing black. We have been cutting them loose and making them available to you. I am only keeping a few dozen pages of negatives and a few complete books for myself, the rest are all being slowly offered to you, in no particular order.

• Each is truly unique, attractive, and fun to have.
• Own a piece of Palladium Books and RPG history you will treasure.
• Each was used to print the very book you may have in your collection (1981-2004).
• Each signed in silver ink by Kevin Siembieda, the founder and owner of Palladium Books. He is also the game designer and often the author or co-author of the book from which the negative originates. And some negatives bear his artwork.
• Each signed negative comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
• Each signed negative is a one-of-a-kind work of art (on rare occasions, two-of-a-kind if a page or section of pages were replaced or a second edition was made) that resembles woodcut art, and a very dynamic conversation piece.
• Each signed negative is on a white board inside a clear plastic bag.
• Negatives looks fabulous matted or framed! Fits in an 8×10 inch matt opening. Each neg is roughly 8½ x 11 inches.
• Prices vary depending on the title, the art, and quality of the negative. Note: Many have scratches, or blemishes, and/or an opaque medium on the negative. Still, they look great and are a piece of RPG history. We recommend you carefully examine the photographs of each item to avoid disappointment.
• We have been making the negatives available, in no particular order, for a number of years, and will continue to do so. However, cutting them loose, signing and bagging is a time consuming process.
• Note: The negatives from the TMNT RPG, TMNT Adventures, and some Rifts® titles are already sold out. Moreover, the negatives from many titles were destroyed, so when you see one you like, get it when you can. Enjoy.

Original art – My Ebay store is one of the few places where you can find original artwork by me (Kevin Siembieda), Kevin Long, Charles Walton, and others, as well as one-of-a-kind negatives from classic Palladium books (they look awesome framed), and other Palladium memorabilia. Some are concept sketches, others are finished works of art, as well as a selection of prints and posters.

Closing Thoughts – It’s all coming together

Very soon, the various Titan Robotics and Cyberworks Collection products will be shipping to our Kickstarter Backers. We will announce as soon as everything has been packaged and shipped to Quartermaster Logistics, our Kickstarter fulfilment company. Sean and I don’t want to suggest a date because we have met with a number of delays internally already; we had hoped to surprise you by shipping in May, but it didn’t happen due to printer delays. I had a strange moment the other day when I felt like a time traveler, because I have seen Palladium’s future and it is amazing. I can see it plainly because I know all the many things Sean and I have put into place these past weeks and months. Relief in the Congo for God’s Children from Human Trafficking (RIGHT) is conducting another Kickstarter to raise money for a great cause. Please support Building Resilience in the Congo (BRIC), a group that rescues, educates, protects, and sustains young boys and girls, as well as young women and young men who would otherwise fall victim to regional warlords and rebels. These villains regularly take children and teenagers from their homes and force them into slave labor, or to become child-soldiers and sex workers against their will.

Slavery and sex trafficking are unfathomably cruel and all too real. A pledge as small as $5 or $10 can make a profound difference to these children and young adults.

I personally know the people running this Kickstarter. They are good folks, and ALL the money (after Kickstarter’s fees) go toward building better, stronger, higher defensive walls around a compound that helps, protects and educates young boys and girls rescued from slavery. Many of the people running the program onsite in the African Congo are former child-soldiers and abused females themselves. People who were either rescued and received help themselves or miraculously found their way back to something of a normal life. Now they are trying to rescue and save other children from a similar fate.

The funds of this particular fund-raiser will go to the construction of a defensive concrete wall, a schoolhouse, and iron gate to protect the children and teenagers rescued from this horrific life.

Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store

I am adding new collectibles and Palladium negatives over the next several weeks, so check ‘em out. Alex and I will try to post new items on a regular basis, so check in every week or so to see what’s new.

One-of-a-kind Palladium Books negatives (special and rare collectibles). Negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House, Gen Con, and conventions, and are catching on as rare collectibles, unique in and of themselves. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. The plastic film negatives were then “ganged” on a massive sheet of Mylar, 16 pages per big sheet, and the printing plates were made from the negatives – everything white, printing black. We have been cutting them loose and making them available to you. I am only keeping a few dozen pages of negatives and a few complete books for myself, the rest are all being slowly offered to you, in no particular order.

• Each is truly unique, attractive, and fun to have.
• Own a piece of Palladium Books and RPG history you will treasure.
• Each was used to print the very book you may have in your collection (1981-2004).
• Each signed in silver ink by Kevin Siembieda, the founder and owner of Palladium Books. He is also the game designer and often the author or co-author of the book from which the negative originates. And some negatives bear his artwork.
• Each signed negative comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
• Each signed negative is a one-of-a-kind work of art (on rare occasions, two-of-a-kind if a page or section of pages were replaced or a second edition was made) that resembles woodcut art, and a very dynamic conversation piece.
• Each signed negative is on a white board inside a clear plastic bag.
• Negatives looks fabulous matted or framed! Fits in an 8×10 inch matt opening. Each neg is roughly 8½ x 11 inches.
• Prices vary depending on the title, the art, and quality of the negative. Note: Many have scratches, or blemishes, and/or an opaque medium on the negative. Still, they look great and are a piece of RPG history. We recommend you carefully examine the photographs of each item to avoid disappointment.
• We have been making the negatives available, in no particular order, for a number of years, and will continue to do so. However, cutting them loose, signing and bagging is a time consuming process.
• Note: The negatives from the TMNT RPG, TMNT Adventures, and some Rifts® titles are already sold out. Moreover, the negatives from many titles were destroyed, so when you see one you like, get it when you can. Enjoy.

Original art – My Ebay store is one of the few places where you can find original artwork by me (Kevin Siembieda), Kevin Long, Charles Walton, and others, as well as one-of-a-kind negatives from classic Palladium books (they look awesome framed), and other Palladium memorabilia. Some are concept sketches, others are finished works of art, as well as a selection of prints and posters.

Closing Thoughts – What is Licensing?

I’m writing this in response to a Help Desk message that Kevin and I recently received, but also to those I see commenting online as to what “opportunities” you think Palladium Books should take advantage of. Many fans seem to be confused as to how things like films, video games, and toys — mass media products — come to pass.

First off, at Palladium we make books. We aren’t aspiring filmmakers or indie video game designers. Kevin and I like it that way. Sure, if a Rifts® movie or video game were being made, we would have a ton of feedback and opinions. Heck, I even have a degree in movie and video game production, but that isn’t our focus. We’re writers first. We could create a movie or comic script, but without a studio deal, that would take a lot of time away from creating the many RPG books you crave for no result. Palladium can facilitate the creation of movies and video games, but we can’t make them ourselves. Reread that last sentence. It’s true.

So how does a mass media product based on Palladium’s stories — or Intellectual Properties (IPs) — happen? Well, it’s nice of you to ask. It works kinda like a traditional dance hall. Generally, a girl waits for a guy to ask her to dance and then either accepts or rejects the offer. In the same way, Palladium is approached with licensing opportunities and makes a decision on which ones to pursue based on the company that’s doing the asking. Are they courteous and friendly? Do they have a lot of money? If we accept an offer from a poor match, we might miss out on another opportunity while we’re dancing with a loser. If we accept a good offer and things go well, we’ll likely agree to another dance (extending the time of the contract). For instance, the Rifts® for Savage Worlds license has gone well, so we renewed and continued the license.

Just to be clear, in all of these cases Palladium Books is the Licensor and our suitors are the Licensees. This means that they approach us and pay us a percentage of profits for the use of our stories (IPs). Some people get this backwards and think that Palladium pays money to the makers of Savage Worlds or other potential Licensees – for instance, if we wanted a Rifts® video game made – but that’s not how it works at all.

“But Sean, I want Rifts®, Nightbane®, Palladium Fantasy RPG®, etc. video games and movies – how do we make that happen?” Well, we make our games and stories as attractive to potential suitors as possible so that they are more likely to approach us and ask us to dance.

We could proactively court Hollywood or other potential Licensees, but it’s generally much more effective to put our efforts into upping our game than chasing phantoms. If mass media opportunities arise, we are open to them, but these things are outside of our direct control. That’s why you see Kevin and myself pouring our efforts into creating new stories and improving Palladium’s processes; those are the efforts that will bear tangible fruit – awesome RPG books! In the end, that’s the important metric and the rest is largely up to fate.
