Palladium Books^® – Weekly Update – January 26, 2024

One game system – every genre – countless worlds – endless adventure

It has been another wild week here at Palladium Books. Wayne and I have been so busy working on products, bookkeeping and reorganization that we barely know what day it is. That said, everything is looking great.

UPDATE: TMNT Kickstarter: Luis Antonio Delgado’s color work on Transdimensional TMNT and Truckin’ Turtles looks fabulous and he’s about to start work on Turtles Go Hollywood. Meanwhile, Michael Majestic is wrapping up the last of his painterly color work for the two color editions, just as Jeremy Colwell is pounding away on the Black, White, and Red editions and blowing our minds with his approach.

The TMNT Miniatures (a Kickstarter Exclusive) are also nearing completion with final tweaks and posing that make us smile. Great work by the team at TransPerfect. More images for the minis and pages from the books will be shown in another week or two.

TMNT Backerkit Pledge Manager will launch early February. This is where you’ll be able to change your pledge, get add-ons and see shipping. Sean and I are working hard at getting the best shipping prices we can for our Backers outside the USA.

UPDATE: Rifts® Bestiary Volume Two: Sean and Matthew Clements are on it. If you loved Volume One, you’ll love Volume Two.

UPDATE: Yin-Sloth Expeditions (Fantasy) – I’m back at it and loving it. This updated and expanded edition builds upon the original Yin-Sloth Jungles book with 30 redrawn maps, new details, new adventures, and new information.

UPDATE: Island at the Edge of the World, 2nd Edition (Fantasy) – The remastered and reedited edition is coming sometime in 2024. This fan favorite, offbeat adventure world book is not a complete redo like Yin-Sloth Jungles 2nd Edition, which was so expanded and updated that it needed a second book, Yin-Sloth Expeditions, to complete it.

UPDATE: Rifts® Antarctica – This is the next Rifts® title I will be finishing up. Written by Matthew Clements and Kevin Siembieda, it is not what you are expecting.

Temporarily SOLD OUT! But at the Printer. A number of book titles are temporarily out of print and several others are nearly sold out! Awesome, please keep those orders coming. We’ve sent 15 titles to the printer. All will be coming back in print throughout the month of February. It has been non-stop activity here in Palladiumville. We shipped out the last of the Surprise Package orders – thank you everyone – and you can read more comments from fans like you at the end of this Weekly Update. Otherwise, we have been dealing with crazy weather, sending temporarily-out-of-print titles to various printers (After the Bomb RPG, Rifts Book of Magic, and Coalition War Campaign, among them), and juggling all sorts of work. There’s also a lot of physical reorganization and strategic restructuring and coordination taking place to make room for new employees, bringing on more freelancers, and to clear our plates so we can make new books!

UPDATE: Rifts® Bestiary Volume 2 – Sean is plotting the book’s design and layout. Then he and first-time father, Matthew Clements, with input and writing from me, will see this hotly anticipated title finished and sent to the printer. No release date just yet. These updated collections with new text, new editing, new maps, and layout are more work than you might imagine.

UPDATE: Yin-Sloth Expeditions (Fantasy) – This updated and expanded edition from the original Yin-Sloth Jungles book is epic, and contains something like 30 redrawn maps, new details, new adventures, and new information. This is the project I dive back into next week.

I can tell you that Sean and I share the goal of trying to surprise you with the number of 2024 titles we would like to see released. More to come in the months ahead.

News! Congratulations to Matthew Clements! Matthew and his lovely wife, Stephanie, welcomed their first child into the world yesterday. All of us at Palladium Books are so delighted for them. Closing Thoughts – Farewell Jennell Jaquays

It struck me hard when I learned video game designer, artist, and role-playing game designer Jennell Jaquays passed away on January 10, 2024. In an alternate dimension somewhere, she and I are partners in the video game business.

Though we had lost touch over the years I have only the fondest memories of her. Jennell was an outstanding human being and my very first, true friend in the RPG industry. I met her when I became a freelance artist for Judges Guild in 1979. Judges Guild was, I believe, the very first official licensee for Dungeons & Dragons. The company released a vast number of cheaply produced Advanced D&D sourcebooks and many issues of Dungeoneer Magazine. Jennell was already making herself a name at Judges Guild as a dynamic illustrator and brilliant, up and coming writer/game designer. She created a ton of artwork for many Judges Guild publications as well as articles and illustrations for Dungeoneer Magazine. Her two breakout publications at Judges Guild were popular adventure sourcebooks for Advanced D&D – Caverns of Thracia (1979) and Dark Tower (1980).

I want to say it was only a month after I started working for Judges Guild that Jennell tracked down my phone number and gave me a call. We had a lot in common: We were the same age, we were more than illustrators with had aspirations to write and design gams, we were facing many of the same challenges, and we became instant friends. We both immediately recognized each other’s talents and supported each other’s efforts as visual artists, writers, and game creators. We encouraged each other to push ourselves and to follow our dreams. At one point Judges Guild owner, Robert “Bob” Bledsaw, told us that we shouldn’t be talking to each other at all, and that he felt like we were colluding against him because we both asked for raises and more creative control in the same week. A funny coincidence as I had no idea Jennell was reaching out to Bob. We both also quit the company around the same time to follow our hearts, though I believe Jennell continued to do some freelance work for Bob.

Jennell would go on to do work for a number of notable RPG companies of the day before getting into video game development. Meanwhile, I started my own game company, Palladium Books. She rose quickly within the burgeoning video game industry at Coleco – a toy company (Cabbage Patch Kids) and video game pioneer; remember ColecoVision? In 1984, Jennel had become Coleco’s Director of Game Design and was putting together an art and design team. She offered me a job as head game designer and concept guy. She said I’d be her main go-to-guy and there was a lot of room for advancement. The pay (for 1984/1985) was staggering, and included a $10,000 signing bonus/moving stipend. I thought long and hard about that offer, but turned it down. A month or two later Jennell appeared at my Gen Con table in person to repeat the offer and encourage me to take it. Though very tempting, especially to a poor kid from Detroit and owner of a three year old start-up company, I remember waving my arms and saying, “What, and give up all of this?” I had a whopping six or seven products, including my latest release, the Heroes Unlimited RPG. Jennell sweetly smiled and said, “Kev, think about it. Talk to your wife. It’s a great opportunity and think of what we can do working together. I need to know your decision by the end of the month.”

I often wonder how different my life – heck, everyone I know, including you, our fans – would have been if I had taken that generous offer. Would I have become a pioneering video game designer? Would I have had to shut down the fledgling Palladium Books? I think so. Would I have discovered and licensed TMNT and Robotech and turned them into popular role-playing games? Probably not. There would have been no Ninjas & Superspies, Beyond the Supernatural or Rifts®, either! My whole life would have taken a very different turn. I would have moved from Detroit, Michigan, to Connecticut, and away from the Detroit Gaming Center, Alex M, Erick Wujcik, Julius Rosenstein, Matthew Balent, Kevin Long, Randy McCall, and other friends and family, as well as a host of influential people I was yet to meet, and experiences I was yet to have. Friends and moments in time that would help motivate, shape me, and encourage me along the path that I did take. It’s kinda wild to think about.

Jennell would go on to become an activist for transgender rights and do many important things in that arena. Like I said, Jennell Jaquays was an outstanding human being, and just one of the many incredible people who have touched my life over these past 67 years.

As for my choice to turn down the job at Coleco (as well as a job with comic book legend, Jim Steranko), I have no regrets. As Erick Wujcik would say, it’s all good. I love the path my life took, even with the ups and downs, twists and turns, tragedies and losses. I wouldn’t change a thing.

And just wait till you see all the exciting changes and products Sean and I have planned for Palladium’s future. Great stuff that will make you squeal with delight like a happy child on Christmas morning. You’ll start to see some of those plans and books manifesting throughout 2024. We thank you for your support and we’re glad to have you – our extended family and friends – with us for Palladium’s wonderful new journey. It’s gonna be a blast.

Hi everyone, happy new year. 2023 ended with wild excitement and 2024 is starting out with a bang.

Starting the new year strong

Oh my gosh, have we been busy. Days have been long and action-packed. We have been so busy I still have a dozen friends I need to send Christmas presents out to. (Sorry, folks; soon, very soon. They are sitting, waiting to be wrapped and sent out. You are not forgotten!)

Some of that busyness has involved our continuing efforts on the TMNT and other Strangeness RPG Kickstarter, coordinating artists and colorists, contracts and approvals, working on setting up the Backerkit pledge manager, and a whole lot more. By the way, the color art is fabulous; the Black, White and Red art is mind-blowing, the tribute art is fun, and the miniature sculpts are dynamic and fun! I think my personal favorites have been the four Ninja Turtles, the four Terror Bears, the TCRI Aliens inside their robot bodies, and Doctor Feral and his assistants, but they all look great.

There have been a bajillian emails to answer, scores of meetings, work being done to move books forward like Yin-Sloth Expeditions, Rifts® Bestiary Volume 2, and Rifts® Antarctica, sold out titles be to sent in for reprint, and business matters to deal with, not to mention the demands of the holidays themselves. Not to sound like Scrooge, but most of us worked through the holidays. Ah, but the moments we managed to squeeze in here and there with family and friends were wonderful.

Christmas Surprise Package frenzy – final days

A great deal of our time has been spent selecting, pulling, and signing books, and then packing and shipping vast numbers of Christmas Surprise Packages (offer ends Monday) as well as numerous regular orders. We are seeing a record number of Surprise Packages and mail orders for the months of December and January. We are all thrilled so many of you are enjoying the Surprise Package, and that you are spreading the word about them. We are seeing hundreds of new people snagging a Surprise Package for the first time and a lot of returning fans. Nice.

NOTE: This is the last weekend to get the Surprise Package. The offer ends Monday, January 15, and will not be extended further. If you have not ordered yours (or one more), there are only a few days left to do so.

What made all of this work challenging is we have been short-handed. Sometime in the middle of the Kickstarter, Sean’s long-haul Covid symptoms returned with a vengeance. He and I were pushing too hard and putting in too many long hours, seven days a week. It just tuckered me out, but Sean was clobbered and knocked off his feet. Still he has continued to push through, working as much as he can manage. And though Wayne is back on site, he has been hobbled and not 100% either. Moreover, after all that physical therapy to get mobile again, the poor guy is to undergo knee surgery in February. Bringing in part-time help could only offer so much assistance.

Ah, but this is all fantastic! As exhausting and crazy as things have been, it has also been exciting and exhilarating. For one, we love making our fans happy with the Surprise Packages. Second, there has been so much positivity. We have been getting a zillion congratulations regarding the return of the TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG, friends and long-time fans reaching out, and a ton of heartwarming and sweet Surprise Package comments from many of you telling us how happy you are for the return of the TMNT RPG and hopes for Palladium’s future. Thank you everyone! We appreciate your support and excitement.

We’re excited too. Sean and I have been interviewing people, bringing in more freelance creators, and putting all kinds of things in motion for the future. We expect to launch another round of YouTube interviews in February and March too. We all continue to be wonderfully busy and loving it. Thank you. Keep those orders and missives coming.

What is a Christmas Surprise Package?

UPDATE: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness RPG Kickstarter

For those of you new to Kickstarters, they are a limited time offer that includes lower pricing, special exclusives available only during the Kickstarter, and special shipping rates. By getting in on the ground floor during the Kickstarter, you are able to order exclusives that are NOT available to the general public. Kickstarter exclusives are only available during the Kickstarter.

Backers are able to pledge at various levels to, in effect, pre-order these exclusives and Kickstarter-only add-ons like miniatures and dice sets.

After the Kickstarter has ended, we need time to set up the pledge manager. We use the popular and efficient Backerkit pledge manager. When the Backerkit goes live, Backers can change and upgrade their original pledge and order as many add-ons, in any quantity (with some restrictions), as they desire. It is in Backerkit that Backers provide their shipping information and can see the estimated shipping costs.

Shipping is usually much cheaper for those of you outside the USA than it would normally be, because Palladium uses a third party shipper/fulfilment company that has special arrangements and superior shipping prices. For example, a six pound (2.7 kg) package to Canada, the UK, or EU usually costs around $80-$90 US dollars for us to ship, but it should be half that via our fulfilment company. The Backerkit pledge manager should go live in early February.

If you did not back the TMNT and Other Strangeness Kickstarter, you will be able to pre-order the following products via the Backerkit Pre-Order Store at the lower Kickstarter prices. One, buy them on the secondary collector’s mark at a higher price when they become available. Those of you who sell stuff online may want to speculate and upgrade and get add-ons to sell later yourselves. Of course, there is no guarantee the value will increase so such speculation comes with plenty of risk.

Two, reach out to a friend or acquaintance who is a Backer and see if they may be willing to add some of the exclusives to their order. HOWEVER, all items will be sent to that Backer only, so your pal will need to rebox, repackage, and ship YOUR items (at additional cost) to you. That’s a big ask, so don’t be angry if your buddy declines to do so. Moreover, Palladium Books cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage that may occur when a third party friend receives the exclusives and ships them to you/others.

Ship Date – September 2024

You notice that we use the word “pre-order” a lot. The books, the miniatures, the dice, are all in final development or done and awaiting final approval (and any changes) by our licensor Paramount and Nickelodeon. As soon as everything is completed, the files are sent to the manufacturer. The actual manufacturing in China and Europe takes a few months and another 4-6 weeks to ship the product to our fulfilment partner who picks, packs, and ships the products to you. As stated in the Kickstarter, September 2024 is the estimated ship date. If everything goes smoothly, we hope that we can get these items to you sooner, but you never know what might unfold, so we cannot promise an earlier delivery date. Happy New Year, everyone. I thought it would be nice to open the first Weekly Update of the new year with this lovely missive from the comment section of a Surprise Package.

I think it is incredible that the same players have reunited 30 years later to play their original characters aged 30 years. It’s a clever and fun idea. Kudos to this player group.

I also love that the bonds of friendship made in role-playing games can stand the test of time. Awesome.

A glimpse into what’s coming in 2024

As for what 2024 may have in store for Palladium fans, we are looking forward to seeing what it may bring as much as you. We have our plans and expectations, of course, but how much we can actually pull off is yet to be seen. We have high hopes for a nice amount of new product releases, starting with Yin-Sloth Expeditions, Rifts® Bestiary Volume 2, and Rifts® Antarctica – in addition to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness Redux editions and Kickstarter fulfilment.

We listen to you and know what you would like to see, and we know what we’d like to accomplish this year. Palladium’s recent policy of not discussing plans until they are rock solid and releases are ready to go to the printer, prevents me from going into great detail, but Yin-Sloth Expeditions, Rifts® Bestiary Volume 2, and Rifts® Antarctica are must releases in the first half of 2024. That’s in addition to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness Redux Kickstarter products later this year. We have a number of titles we hope to surprise you with, but no hints or announcements just yet. Most (all?) will be titles you have been looking forward to seeing released.

The excitement of the TMNT Kickstarter and the impending release of those products later this year, makes 2024 feel special and new, even magical. It feels like a fresh and exciting new beginning; which it is. As Sean and I keep saying, this is just the beginning of our future plans for Palladium Books. The success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness Redux Kickstarter is a nice glimpse of what’s to come across the board. These are products we all know and love, but also new and expanded in ways that should thrill and delight. Products that harken to both the past and the future, which also hints at what you can expect from Palladium Books as we move forward.

I can tell you our immediate next step is to bring in our new warehouse/shipping person this March. Crystal left us at the end of September, so Alex, Wayne, and all of us have been filling in during the busy holiday season. Finding an Operations Manager to free me and Sean up to write and handle the big picture affairs is next. We have a short list of candidates we are considering and hope to bring that individual in as soon as possible. We’ve been meeting and talking with people in December. Fingers crossed! We have been getting some general help from my old friend Richard Cook and we are looking to secure much more of Matthew Clements’ time as a writer and editor.

The above are just a few of the goings-on behind the scenes as Sean and I work to create a rock solid foundation for Palladium’s future. Over the next year or two, we look forward to bringing on more staff and freelancers, as well as exploring other business opportunities, but TMNT and new book releases are front and foremost at the moment.

Closing Thoughts – Welcome to the Megaverse^®

And that includes those of you who have never left. Welcome all! New and returning role-players, and stalwart supporters who have been with Palladium Books for years, even decades. We love having you in our gaming universe and extended family.

Over the past five years Palladium has seen a steadily increasing number of new and returning gamers to the Palladium Megaverse. That number made a steep rise during the pandemic years and it took a meteoric leap in 2023, thanks in part to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness Redux Kickstarter and the many video interviews Sean and I made for it. We know this because many of you have told us so, especially the viewing audiences of Legion of Myth and the Glitterbois YouTube channels. A lot of you have also told us how much you enjoy seeing the dynamics between me and Sean, and our passion for Palladium Books and our many game worlds.

Sean and I intend to do an increasing number of interviews on these channels and others, including Palladium’s own YouTube channel. We love interacting with our fellow gamers and talking about role-playing games and the creative process, so if you want us on your channel, all you need to do is reach out to us and we’ll try to squeeze you into our crazy schedule.

The next five years should be exciting for new and long-time fans alike. We intend to expand upon your favorite existing world settings, release titles you’ve been waiting for, and maybe even add a new world or genre or two. We can’t get into the specifics right now, but you’ll see where we’re heading soon enough. Yin-Sloth Expeditions, Rifts® Bestiary Volume 2, and Rifts® Antarctica are at the top of our release list, along with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness Redux editions and Kickstarter exclusives, but there is so much more in the works. More is yet to come.

Final Days of the Surprise Package. Reminder, the next 11 days are all that’s left to order your 2023 Surprise Package – offer ends January 15 and will not be extended further.
