A lot of exciting stuff is happening here in Palladiumville as we continue to make all kinds of moves behind the scenes. I have been knocking out art and writing for the TMNT & Other Strangeness Redux, Yin-Sloth Expeditions, and Rifts® Bestiary 2.

Sean has been hammering away on the TMNT & Other Strangeness Redux coordinating and submitting the last of the hundreds of color illustrations and dozens of tribute art pages as well as the remastering of the text and layout, among other things.

The Valley of the Pharaohs – Expanded 40th Anniversary Edition KICKSTARTER

– Role-playing in the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt (1450 BCE) – by Matthew Balent

This is NOT a Palladium Books Kickstarter, but I fully endorse it. Valley of the Pharaohs was Palladium’s first boxed game released back in 1984 and has become something of a Holy Grail acquisition for collectors. When Matthew Balent, the original creator and author of the game, asked me if he could build on the original game and do a new, expanded 40th Anniversary Edition of it as a Kickstarter offer, I said, “absolutely yes.”

Well, Matt has gone and done it. From what I can tell, it still features artwork, diagrams and maps by me (Kevin Siembieda), additional art by me and Mary Walsh, and the original text and concepts extensively expanded with new material by the original author. How much new stuff? I think the original book (plus 12 or 14 pull outs) was 64 pages. The 40th Anniversary Valley of the Pharaohs is a 250 page, 8 1/2 x 11 inch book with new magic spells, new skills, enemies, history, and lots of world information. Remember, this will be a book rather than a boxed game. It looks fun and is a piece of Palladium history. I know I want a copy! Matt is also the author of much of the Weapons and Armor book series. All historically accurate and suitable for any game systems from D&D and Pathfinder to Palladium Fantasy and Rifts.

BRIC and Goma Citizens need our help

Hello, my name is Larry Nelson, Vice President for RIGHT – Relief in the Congo for God’s Children from Human Trafficking. We are a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization working to protect children and help families in the Congo.

RIGHT’s mission is to raise funds to assist the BRIC Foundation (Building Resilience in the Congo Foundation) in their rescue efforts to save young boys being stolen from their families and forced to become child-soldiers against their will. BRIC also rescues young girls whose bodies are often used as commodities by the armed rebel factions that plague the eastern portion of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

RIGHT has managed to raise funds to build enclosures for BRIC sanctuaries including fortified walls, gates, classrooms, teachers, and more to protect children while giving them an education, a safe place where they can function during the day. At night, many BRIC associates take the children into their own homes to feed and care for them as they would their own families.

In 2023 RIGHT purchased property in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo where the enclosure pictured is built. Here BRIC holds classes on auto repair, sewing, hairdressing for men and women, as well as crafting musical instruments and other items to sell as income-generating opportunities. They have also held creative workshops to help the children and people of surrounding communities, like Goma, address their substantial trauma.

However, military conflict in this region has increased over the past year, making BRIC’s local efforts all the more essential to protect innocent people. As we speak, the city of Goma is surrounded by violent rebel factions who regularly block the passage of people, food, and medicines.

Food supply lines from other communities have been cut off by these warring rebel forces, forcing Goma’s citizens to either forage for food in the rainforest or starve. However, mothers and fathers cannot leave their children home while they forage for food, because if left alone, the children are at great risk of being kidnaped and trafficked, turned into child-soldiers, or worse.

Thankfully, BRIC provides a refuge for the area’s children. BRIC associates are now accepting neighboring Goma children into their sanctuary’s enclosure during the day so their parents can sneak out into the wilderness in search of food to feed their families.

It is a grim situation, but your contributions to this crowdfunding campaign will help immeasurably.

Your contributions over the last few years have provided the fortified walls and iron gate to the BRIC enclosure, as well as the school, educational programs, and necessary supplies for all who seek help and safe haven there. You are making a direct and lifesaving difference to these families in need.

It is a blessing that, with your previous contributions, BRIC was able to complete construction of the Goma sanctuary’s thick walls and armored security gate in the nick of time before this latest outbreak of war and violence.

Now more than ever, money is needed to provide emergency food, shelter, and basic necessities for those who seek help from BRIC during this time of strife. Another imperative that RIGHT is looking to help fund is the installation of security lights and barbed wire atop the sanctuary’s walls to better protect those within – any funds donated in excess of immediate needs will go towards these improved safety measures.

We pray that the rebel forces, Congolese Army, and Congolese leaders can find a way to bring peace back to the area. Until then, RIGHT will need to raise funds to help BRIC protect and assist as many children and families as possible.

Remembrance Sneak Preview

Remembering the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness RPG and its author Erick Wujcik

Erick Wujcik was a prominent figure throughout my childhood. I knew him as my parents’ colleague, a gamer, a writer, but mostly, as family.

I can’t speak to Erick as a writer or a game master, but what I can say is that he was one of the biggest dreamers I have ever known. Erick lived large and unapologetically through a beautiful imagination and shared that gift with everyone around him.

Erick lived in the world of possibilities as a matter of fact. Growing up, I can remember the indelible imprint this had on me – that anything is possible.

His hug and his laugh and his heart were just as huge as his personality. I am forever grateful for the magic that Erick Wujcik brought into my life. He dreamt big and out loud, and without even trying, showed us all how it’s done.

[Note: Just as I do for the Christmas Surprise Package Comments from Fans Like You, I will include a few of my own thoughts and memories (sometimes Sean will too). I hope you enjoy this new, limited, feature. It was Sean’s idea and I love it. – Kevin Siembieda]

For those of you who wish you could have known Erick Wujcik, now you do. Monica, my daughter, completely captured the essence and beauty of Erick Wujcik with her elegant and simple remembrance.

That was Erick to a T. Bigger than life. A burly, six foot two inch, bear of a man. A thick crop of curly black hair crowned his head and his smiling face was finished off with a complimentary bushy, black beard and a soup-strainer mustache. He looked like the character Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof, complete with the leather fisherman’s cap. I think most people thought that ever present cap was glued to his head. How he loved that cap. I remember he and I driving around metro-Detroit and visiting shoemaker and leatherworks shops in search of someone who could repair or make a new cap based on the deteriorating one.

Some people found Erick to be large and intimidating. That puzzled me, because I always saw him as a sweet Teddy Bear of a man. Smart, kind, generous, cheerful, and the epitome of a gamer. Nah, he was more like the Johnny Appleseed of gaming; quick to run a role-playing game anytime, anywhere. That included from the backseat of a car without books, paper or dice. It was all managed and run from his brilliant mind. The only guy I knew, besides myself, who could run a game as freestyle improv.

And yes, he was family. Erick and I were as close as brothers. Closer. I was one of Erick’s biggest fans and supporters, and he was one of mine. There were two decades when we talked nearly every single day. We could, and did, regularly talk for hours about everything and anything. Gaming, game design, game theory, comic books, movies, new technology, and history were among our favorite subjects, but we talked about so much more – our relationships, our hopes, our dreams, we shared our innermost thoughts. No secrets. We knew each other inside and out and touched each other’s soul.

Six months before Erick died in the summer of 2008, he threw himself a big, catered, 57th birthday party in a sizeable hall. There had to be close to a hundred people present – his Mom and a few family members, but mostly friends. An army of friends who loved and adored him, and were his family. Erick asked me to MC the affair. I told him I didn’t think I was the man for the job, but he said I was the only one who could do it. So I did. It was beautiful. – Kevin Siembieda

Good memories. Warm feelings. Old friends. New friends. Great fans. Illustrious Palladium Books history. Tons of work going on with current projects and stuff you don’t even know about behind the scenes. New books are coming. I love my job, the people I work with, and you, our awesome fans.

Palladium’s Hot Sellers this week? While Rifts®, especially the Rifts 30th Anniversary Edition hardcover, and Palladium Fantasy sales remain strong, we have seen a burst of interest in Dead Reign®, Heroes Unlimited and After the Bomb® game line sales this week. The latter two surging even before the new TMNT update and pledge manager going live. We are seeing a similar trend among retailer and distributor orders where Rifts® reigns supreme, but there is also strong interest in the game lines noted above. There also appears to be an escalating interest in all hardcovers across the Megaverse®.

UPDATE: Yin-Sloth Expeditions. John Klinkel suggested we add a new adventure for the Orcish Empire. I loved the idea, so I am building on the adventure he submitted. When I told him what I was doing, he said, “Oh wow, the fans will love that. I love that.” Me too. I also drew the main bad guy in the adventure. Drawing relaxes me so it was a nice change from our hectic pace and long hours.

UPDATE: Other Projects. Rifts® Bestiary Volume Two is moving along and I did a little work on Rifts® Antarctica when a flash of inspiration struck. I have also been working on the history behind the TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG as well as soliciting and editing written remembrances submitted by other creators for the Redux Edition. That includes people who knew and gamed with Erick Wujcik.

BRIC and Goma Citizens need our help

Hello, my name is Larry Nelson, Vice President for RIGHT – Relief in the Congo for God’s Children from Human Trafficking. We are a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization working to protect children and help families in the Congo.

RIGHT’s mission is to raise funds to assist the BRIC Foundation (Building Resilience in the Congo Foundation) in their rescue efforts to save young boys being stolen from their families and forced to become child-soldiers against their will. BRIC also rescues young girls whose bodies are often used as commodities by the armed rebel factions that plague the eastern portion of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

RIGHT has managed to raise funds to build enclosures for BRIC sanctuaries including fortified walls, gates, classrooms, teachers, and more to protect children while giving them an education, a safe place where they can function during the day. At night, many BRIC associates take the children into their own homes to feed and care for them as they would their own families.

In 2023 RIGHT purchased property in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo where the enclosure pictured is built. Here BRIC holds classes on auto repair, sewing, hairdressing for men and women, as well as crafting musical instruments and other items to sell as income-generating opportunities. They have also held creative workshops to help the children and people of surrounding communities, like Goma, address their substantial trauma.

However, military conflict in this region has increased over the past year, making BRIC’s local efforts all the more essential to protect innocent people. As we speak, the city of Goma is surrounded by violent rebel factions who regularly block the passage of people, food, and medicines.

Food supply lines from other communities have been cut off by these warring rebel forces, forcing Goma’s citizens to either forage for food in the rainforest or starve. However, mothers and fathers cannot leave their children home while they forage for food, because if left alone, the children are at great risk of being kidnaped and trafficked, turned into child-soldiers, or worse.

Thankfully, BRIC provides a refuge for the area’s children. BRIC associates are now accepting neighboring Goma children into their sanctuary’s enclosure during the day so their parents can sneak out into the wilderness in search of food to feed their families.

It is a grim situation, but your contributions to this crowdfunding campaign will help immeasurably.

Your contributions over the last few years have provided the fortified walls and iron gate to the BRIC enclosure, as well as the school, educational programs, and necessary supplies for all who seek help and safe haven there. You are making a direct and lifesaving difference to these families in need.

It is a blessing that, with your previous contributions, BRIC was able to complete construction of the Goma sanctuary’s thick walls and armored security gate in the nick of time before this latest outbreak of war and violence.

Now more than ever, money is needed to provide emergency food, shelter, and basic necessities for those who seek help from BRIC during this time of strife. Another imperative that RIGHT is looking to help fund is the installation of security lights and barbed wire atop the sanctuary’s walls to better protect those within – any funds donated in excess of immediate needs will go towards these improved safety measures.

We pray that the rebel forces, Congolese Army, and Congolese leaders can find a way to bring peace back to the area. Until then, RIGHT will need to raise funds to help BRIC protect and assist as many children and families as possible.

Closing Thoughts

– Hanging with Mirage Studio legends Jim Lawson, Steve Lavigne, and Dan Berger

All three were guests at the Great Lakes Comic Convention in Warren, Michigan, last weekend. The event took place at the Warren Convention Center, a 45 minute drive from the Palladium offices, so I had invited the guys to visit Palladium Books. Sadly, they couldn’t squeeze it into their very tight schedule, so Sean and I came to them. I have to admit, Sean and I are juggling so much that driving out to see them didn’t cross our minds until Sophie Campbell said, “If they can’t come to you, you must go to them! It will be wonderful.” Thank you, Sophie, we did and it was wonderful visiting with them.

The last time I saw this crew was at a 1990s Mid-Ohio Con – and it was the first time Sean was meeting them in person. [Which was rad! – Sean] The guys generously invited me and Sean to join their panel talk. That was a funny, spontaneous event. Sean and I sat quietly in the audience prepared to enjoy the question and answer session. About 5 minutes into the talk, someone in the audience asked how TMNT & Other Strangeness came about. Steve Lavigne gave an accurate but brief answer and some follow-up questions were asked. I raised my hand, stood up, and said, “I can provide more details on that if you’d like. I’m Kevin Siembieda, the founder of Palladium Books.”

The crowd burst into cheers and clapping. Jim Lawson exclaimed, “Kevin! We didn’t recognize you. The last time we saw you your hair was dark brown.” (It’s white nowadays.) We all laughed about that, and the crowd with us. The three sweet guys insisted Sean and I join the panel talk. We did and had fun talking about all things Ninja Turtles.

Afterward, Sean and I hung out for a few hours to get a few TMNT RPG books signed, buy some original artwork, and enjoy a nice chat with them and their wives. By the way, Jim Lawson, Steve Lavigne, and Dan Berger are each doing an amazing full page tribute art and a written remembrance for the Redux Edition.

Sean showed them a bunch of the new art and color work for the Redux TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG, as well as the Kickstarter Exclusive miniatures (you can see them yourselves in the most recent TMNT & Other Strangeness Kickstarter Update). Jim Lawson loved the color work on his black and white illustration by Luis Antonio Delgado, and all three Mirage artists went wild over the TMNT Kickstarter miniatures. (Kickstarter Exclusives only available to Backers.) They unanimously said these were among the very best miniatures they’ve ever seen for TMNT, and that the figures looked like they leapt out of the pages of the RPG. (We agree!) The guys made us promise they would get a set of the miniatures and the Redux hardcovers. We assured them we would see to it.

It was a pleasant afternoon with some cool TMNT dudes and their lovely wives. [My favorite part was just hanging out with them. – Sean] The convention’s dealer area was pretty nice too and I’d recommend this convention (I think they hold four events a year) for anyone who lives in the area. I know Sean and I will be back to a future event.

One of our personal rewards working on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness Redux has been reconnecting with old friends and associates like Kevin, Peter, Jim, Steve, Dan, Freddie, Mike, and a host of others; and forming new relationships with wonderful people like Sophie Campbell, Ciro Nieli, Jeremy Colwell, Luis Antonio Delgado, Mike Rooth, and many others. [Or if you’re me, forming a slew of new friendships. – Sean] Not only are these men and women talented creators in their own right, but they are nice people. It has been an honor and a pleasure working with them.

One game system – every genre – countless worlds – endless adventure

Good health. Sean and I are both feeling about 90% back on our feet and getting a lot done on many fronts. Wayne’s knee surgery went well and though it will take months of physical therapy to get him back to 100%, his therapy is also going well. We hope to see him back at work soon; he’s been working remotely.

UPDATE: Yin-Sloth Expeditions and more. Whew, there is so much to do all the time, but I’m back to work on Yin-Sloth Expeditions as well as bits and pieces for Rifts® Bestiary Vol. 2, and, of course, TMNT & Other Strangeness. I’m drawing some mutant animals and doing a tribute art piece as well as a historical/making of piece about the RPG’s creation and Erick Wujcik. Fun stuff I’m enjoying writing.

UPDATE: TMNT and Other Strangeness Kickstarter books and exclusives are also coming along. Most of the artwork, color pages, packaging, and the final poses for miniatures have been submitted and awaiting final approvals from Paramount. Sean hopes to have a big update announcement showing miniatures and other artwork soon.

As I have mentioned, the TMNT & Other Strangeness color work by all the artists is beautiful, the tribute art is impressive and fun, the written remembrances are touching, funny, or both, and the miniatures … wow … the final poses are stunning. We can’t wait to show you this stuff.

I have spent much of this week reaching out to artists and gently reminding a handful of them about the deadlines for their tribute art and remembrances. Kevin Eastman’s variant cover painting is one of the pieces we know you want to see, but we are still waiting to receive it. This caring creator is slammed with work involving the 2024 year-long TMNT 40th Anniversary celebration, the launch of Last Ronin II (it sounds epic!), and a zillion other obligations. Palladium editor Alex Marciniszyn calls me the hardest working guy in gaming. Well, I think Kevin Eastman may be one of the hardest working people on the planet. And he, like us here at Palladium Books, truly cares about his fans, so he wants to make that cover as beautiful and special as possible. We want that too.

I’m surprised how many people discovered TMNT via the role-playing game, as a number of remembrances attest to. Most TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG players also played Heroes Unlimited, Ninjas & Superspies, and Palladium Fantasy RPG. On a personal level, I find it moving and gratifying that the RPG introduced people to TMNT and all our games have meant so much to so many. Game on.

Hello, my name is Larry Nelson, Vice President for RIGHT – Relief in the Congo for God’s Children from Human Trafficking. We are a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization working to protect children and help families in the Congo.

RIGHT’s mission is to raise funds to assist the BRIC Foundation (Building Resilience in the Congo Foundation) in their rescue efforts to save young boys being stolen from their families and forced to become child-soldiers against their will. BRIC also rescues young girls whose bodies are often used as commodities by the armed rebel factions that plague the eastern portion of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

RIGHT has managed to raise funds to build enclosures for BRIC sanctuaries including fortified walls, gates, classrooms, teachers, and more to protect children while giving them an education, a safe place where they can function during the day. At night, many BRIC associates take the children into their own homes to feed and care for them as they would their own families.

In 2023 RIGHT purchased property in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo where the enclosure pictured is built. Here BRIC holds classes on auto repair, sewing, hairdressing for men and women, as well as crafting musical instruments and other items to sell as income-generating opportunities. They have also held creative workshops to help the children and people of surrounding communities, like Goma, address their substantial trauma.

However, military conflict in this region has increased over the past year, making BRIC’s local efforts all the more essential to protect innocent people. As we speak, the city of Goma is surrounded by violent rebel factions who regularly block the passage of people, food, and medicines.

Food supply lines from other communities have been cut off by these warring rebel forces, forcing Goma’s citizens to either forage for food in the rainforest or starve. However, mothers and fathers cannot leave their children home while they forage for food, because if left alone, the children are at great risk of being kidnaped and trafficked, turned into child-soldiers, or worse.

Thankfully, BRIC provides a refuge for the area’s children. BRIC associates are now accepting neighboring Goma children into their sanctuary’s enclosure during the day so their parents can sneak out into the wilderness in search of food to feed their families.

It is a grim situation, but your contributions to this crowdfunding campaign will help immeasurably.

Your contributions over the last few years have provided the fortified walls and iron gate to the BRIC enclosure, as well as the school, educational programs, and necessary supplies for all who seek help and safe haven there. You are making a direct and lifesaving difference to these families in need.

It is a blessing that, with your previous contributions, BRIC was able to complete construction of the Goma sanctuary’s thick walls and armored security gate in the nick of time before this latest outbreak of war and violence.

Now more than ever, money is needed to provide emergency food, shelter, and basic necessities for those who seek help from BRIC during this time of strife. Another imperative that RIGHT is looking to help fund is the installation of security lights and barbed wire atop the sanctuary’s walls to better protect those within – any funds donated in excess of immediate needs will go towards these improved safety measures.

We pray that the rebel forces, Congolese Army, and Congolese leaders can find a way to bring peace back to the area. Until then, RIGHT will need to raise funds to help BRIC protect and assist as many children and families as possible.

Are things quiet in your neck of the woods?

When it comes to Palladium Books, what you are experiencing is the calm before the storm. A storm of new products. I assure you, behind the scenes, Palladium is abuzz with activity. We are coordinating with artists, writers, and new freelancers of all sorts as well as new employees coming on board! Yes, you heard that right, new employees. See Sean’s Closing Thoughts for more details.

There are 14 TMNT and Other Strangeness Kickstarter products alone! The two TMNT books, two variant cover editions, some new mutant animals, a new adventure by me and Sophie Campbell, and the Black, White & Red edition magnificently toned and colored by Jeremy Colwell, plus two sets of miniatures (21 minis total and my mind was blown when I saw the breathtaking final poses the other day), 6 sets of dice, the G.M. screen, a TMNT poker deck, print sets, as well as work on the final colors by the likes of Mike Majestic (amazing), Luis Antonio Delgado (the incredible Last Ronin colorist), and Jeremy Colwell (outstanding), final TMNT tribute art and colors, inviting additional creators to make tribute art and written remembrances, sending out contracts and payments, lining things up with the printer, and coordinating it all. Sean and I have been crazy busy. We all have.

We want to show you everything TMNT right now, but the final art, final approvals, and production aspects are taking a little longer, which is why the Backerkit pledge manager has not gone live just yet. But oh, my gosh, you will love these books, game screen, dice, and Kickstarter exclusives. We are pulling out all the stops.

There are a lot more books and products planned for 2024 than TMNT & Other Strangeness. We had a big meeting a couple days ago discussing new product releases and our crowdfunding projects for the next two years. We canceled a couple of unannounced plans that were unknown to you and moved up a few others. As you know, Yin-Sloth Expeditions, Rifts® Bestiary Volume Two, and Rifts® Antarctica are all in the pipeline, but if all goes well there are other books we hope to surprise you with. And that does not include new and fan requested reissues of mugs, T-shirts, and art prints.

Conventions & Events: We are also coordinating for the Ann Arbor Library Game Designers event (April), Gen Con (July/August), the Alliance Open House (trade show, September), and Granite State Convention (September).

We are tackling subjects in a rough chronological order. I’m having fun skipping down Memory Lane with some fun facts coming out that usually don’t during more general interviews. Closing Thoughts – Upgrading the Machine – By Sean Owen Roberson

Howdy fans,

I hope you are all weathering the cold winter weather. Kevin already mentioned a lot of things in the works, and I wanted to supplement that with a few words on the strides being made to make Palladium a stronger organization so that Kevin and I can focus more and more of our limited time on doing what only very few can do at the level of quality that Palladium is legendary for – writing awesome role-playing game books that you will treasure for decades!

Kevin has mentioned it previously, but we are bringing in some new blood for the warehouse – Caleb Nelson. Caleb is my younger brother, and an all-around good guy. After he recently expressed interest in the warehouse position after Crystal’s departure, I realized he is potentially a great fit, but he is family so I decided to let Kevin take the lead in interviewing him and making the hiring decision. Caleb has years of experience working for FedEx, so our humble warehouse is simple and straightforward to him. In addition to being a good fit for the shipping and storage side of things, Caleb is a huge gamer. Besides literally growing up playing Palladium’s Rifts plus other RPGs, board games, and video games with me, he helped me playtest a lot of the updates that appeared in the second edition of Rifts for Savage Worlds and even had critically important feedback. He is a solid judge of what makes good rules as well as the overall quality of various gaming materials. So don’t be surprised come March when he answers the office phone, or you see his name listed in the proofreading and concepts sections of future Palladium books. Kevin and I are happy to add Caleb to our team.

I’m also proud to announce that Palladium has hired Christopher Landauer as our marketing, crowdfunding, and social media manager. He is a Stanford graduate with a degree in Business Science or some such – Kev and I don’t care a lot about certifications but we weren’t surprised to learn of his education after working with him; he’s sharp! You’ve probably noticed his name in the comments and updates sections of the TMNT Redux Edition Kickstarter. In addition to that, Landauer has been working in a similar role with our friends at Pinnacle Entertainment Group, the makers of Savage Worlds, where he earned a reputation as a steady hand running Kickstarters and social outreach. This means I’ve had the pleasure of working with Landauer as a colleague for years while spearheading the Savage Rifts line of books. In that time, and during the TMNT Kickstarter, he has earned my trust (and Kevin’s) and been an amazing force multiplier coordinating the campaign and liaising with our advertising partners. Chris is already hard at work with Wayne finishing up the BackerKit Pledge Manager, and over the coming weeks you will hear more from him as he gets settled into his responsibilities with us here at Palladium Books – including future Weekly Updates.

Oh, and speaking of Savage Rifts and our comrades at Pinnacle, Terror on the Dark Frontier – the first-ever boxed adventure set for Rifts – is now available! Set in the Comanche Preserve region on the border between the New West and the Coalition’s frontier territories, the adventures are split between two hefty booklets: one for regional background and location-based stories, the other for an epic adventure campaign. I was one of the primary writers on it as well as the main architect and editor, so I think it’s pretty good stuff, but you don’t have to trust me because Kevin loved it and a ton of fans are raving about it online. It seems like the Savage Rifts team struck the mark, and I’m very proud of the result. I almost can’t believe the quality of the artwork, new and old, and the written material is just classic and a joy to edit. Kevin Siembieda has been out most of this week. Been down since Sunday night. Thursday has been my first 8 hour day back at the office. I got tested and am happy to report that I do not have Covid, the Flu, or RSV, but whatever it is, it has hit me hard. Glad we did it Wednesday night because my cough is worse today. Otherwise, I’m feeling better overall. Closing Thoughts – This and That

So much is happening here at Palladium Books, the days are just flying by. I know Sean is planning a TMNT Kickstarter Update next week, but here’s what I can tell you. I have seen the final posed sculpts for the four Ninja Turtles, April O’Neil, and Shredder and I actually cheered out loud, they are so nice. They are being submitted for final approval. Great work by the team at TransPerfect. And as I said last week, the color work by Majestic, Colwell, and Delgado is stellar. Rumor has it, Kevin Eastman will be getting us his finished cover in a couple of weeks! Can’t wait. More tribute art and remembrances are coming in too. Shoot, I need to reach out to a handful of artists yet. We hope to add a few surprises.

Work on other titles is moving along, as well as a couple of secret projects.

Rifts® Bestiary Volume Two: Sean and Matthew Clements are on it. If you loved Volume One, you’ll love Volume Two.

Yin-Sloth Expeditions (Fantasy) – I was excited and pleased to be back working on it, before other matters pulled me away from it the first part of this week. I hope to get back to it by the end of the week. This updated and expanded edition builds upon the original Yin-Sloth Jungles book with 30 redrawn maps, new details, new adventures, and new information. Very cool.

Island at the Edge of the World, 2nd Edition (Fantasy) – The remastered and reedited edition is coming sometime in 2024. This fan favorite, offbeat adventure world book is not a complete redo like Yin-Sloth Jungles 2nd Edition, which was so expanded and updated that it needed a second book, Yin-Sloth Expeditions, to complete it.

Rifts® Antarctica – This is the next Rifts® title I will be finishing up. Matthew Clements did a nice job, but I’m taking it to the next level, and we hope to present some cool stuff nobody is expecting.

I spoke with artists Phil Stone and Mike Gustovich about upcoming projects. I enjoy working with Phil and it is great to be working with my old pal Mike again. I need to reach out to Nick Bradshaw and several others.

Poor Wayne. He fell off a roof and messed up his knee in September and he has spent the last three months in rest and physical therapy to get his muscles strong enough for surgery. That surgery is Friday. It should be pretty standard fare, though they won’t know the severity of the repairs to his ACL and other components until they are inside. That will leave Wayne out of commission for – we don’t know how long – followed by another 2-3 months of rest and physical therapy.

Good news. Writer Carmen Bellaire (Rifts® Black Market, Splicers, Powers Unlimited series) is a private person, so all I can report is that he had a severe, life threatening condition, underwent surgery before Christmas, and though there were grave concerns, the complex surgery went exceedingly well. He is in his long recovery period, but doing well and talking about working on a couple of writing projects for Palladium. I’m looking forward to seeing him in a few weeks.

More good news. First-time father Matthew Clements, mother, and baby girl Meredith are all doing well. So happy for this beautiful family.

As for me, other than putting in too many hours working, stress, and a thousand deadlines, I’m doing well. No health issues I’m aware of. I get a check-up next month. Wish I had more time to just write. We’re working on getting there. I’m so busy, I still have 8-10 Christmas presents I want to send to pals and freelancers – Sorry Rex, Greg, Brian, Allen, Apollo, and others. Next week maybe. Sheesh.

My thanks to my old pal, Richard Cook, for helping out on Sundays on myriad projects – mostly pulling, packing, shipping, inventory, and reorganizing our facility. He’ll be around for play tests and other odds and ends.

I need to get back to work. It has been another wild week here at Palladium Books. Wayne and I have been so busy working on products, bookkeeping and reorganization that we barely know what day it is. That said, everything is looking great.

UPDATE: TMNT Kickstarter: Luis Antonio Delgado’s color work on Transdimensional TMNT and Truckin’ Turtles looks fabulous and he’s about to start work on Turtles Go Hollywood. Meanwhile, Michael Majestic is wrapping up the last of his painterly color work for the two color editions, just as Jeremy Colwell is pounding away on the Black, White, and Red editions and blowing our minds with his approach.

The TMNT Miniatures (a Kickstarter Exclusive) are also nearing completion with final tweaks and posing that make us smile. Great work by the team at TransPerfect. More images for the minis and pages from the books will be shown in another week or two.

TMNT Backerkit Pledge Manager will launch early February. This is where you’ll be able to change your pledge, get add-ons and see shipping. Sean and I are working hard at getting the best shipping prices we can for our Backers outside the USA.

It has been non-stop activity here in Palladiumville. We shipped out the last of the Surprise Package orders – thank you everyone – and you can read more comments from fans like you at the end of this Weekly Update. Otherwise, we have been dealing with crazy weather, sending temporarily-out-of-print titles to various printers (After the Bomb RPG, Rifts Book of Magic, and Coalition War Campaign, among them), and juggling all sorts of work. There’s also a lot of physical reorganization and strategic restructuring and coordination taking place to make room for new employees, bringing on more freelancers, and to clear our plates so we can make new books!

UPDATE: Rifts® Bestiary Volume 2 – Sean is plotting the book’s design and layout. Then he and first-time father, Matthew Clements, with input and writing from me, will see this hotly anticipated title finished and sent to the printer. No release date just yet. These updated collections with new text, new editing, new maps, and layout are more work than you might imagine.

UPDATE: Yin-Sloth Expeditions (Fantasy) – This updated and expanded edition from the original Yin-Sloth Jungles book is epic, and contains something like 30 redrawn maps, new details, new adventures, and new information. This is the project I dive back into next week.

UPDATE: Island at the Edge of the World, 2nd Edition (Fantasy) – The remastered and reedited edition is coming sometime in 2024. This fan favorite, off-beat adventure world book is not a complete redo like Yin-Sloth Jungles 2nd Edition, which was so expanded and updated that it needed a second book, Yin-Sloth Expeditions, to complete it.

UPDATE: Rifts® Antarctica – This the next Rifts® title I will be finishing up. Written by Matthew Clements and Kevin Siembieda, it is not what you are expecting.

UPDATE: TMNT and other Strangeness Backerkit Pledge Manager – Wayne has been working to put it all together and get it ready to launch. It goes live early February.

UPDATE: TMNT and other Strangeness RPG Kickstarter – Everything is moving along and heading toward manufacturing.

UPDATE: Other 2024 RPG releases – Reminder, it is Palladium’s new policy to no longer estimate release dates for upcoming releases nor talk about our plans for books until they are completed and heading to the printer, but we have a lot we would like to accomplish. I can tell you that Sean and I share the goal of trying to surprise you with the number of 2024 titles we would like to see released. More to come in the months ahead.

Closing Thoughts – Farewell Jennell Jaquays

It struck me hard when I learned video game designer, artist, and role-playing game designer Jennell Jaquays passed away on January 10, 2024. In an alternate dimension somewhere, she and I are partners in the video game business.

Though we had lost touch over the years I have only the fondest memories of her. Jennell was an outstanding human being and my very first, true friend in the RPG industry. I met her when I became a freelance artist for Judges Guild in 1979. Judges Guild was, I believe, the very first official licensee for Dungeons & Dragons. The company released a vast number of cheaply produced Advanced D&D sourcebooks and many issues of Dungeoneer Magazine. Jennell was already making herself a name at Judges Guild as a dynamic illustrator and brilliant, up and coming writer/game designer. She created a ton of artwork for many Judges Guild publications as well as articles and illustrations for Dungeoneer Magazine. Her two breakout publications at Judges Guild were popular adventure sourcebooks for Advanced D&D – Caverns of Thracia (1979) and Dark Tower (1980).

I want to say it was only a month after I started working for Judges Guild that Jennell tracked down my phone number and gave me a call. We had a lot in common: We were the same age, we were more than illustrators with had aspirations to write and design gams, we were facing many of the same challenges, and we became instant friends. We both immediately recognized each other’s talents and supported each other’s efforts as visual artists, writers, and game creators. We encouraged each other to push ourselves and to follow our dreams. At one point Judges Guild owner, Robert “Bob” Bledsaw, told us that we shouldn’t be talking to each other at all, and that he felt like we were colluding against him because we both asked for raises and more creative control in the same week. A funny coincidence as I had no idea Jennell was reaching out to Bob. We both also quit the company around the same time to follow our hearts, though I believe Jennell continued to do some freelance work for Bob.

Jennell would go on to do work for a number of notable RPG companies of the day before getting into video game development. Meanwhile, I started my own game company, Palladium Books. She rose quickly within the burgeoning video game industry at Coleco – a toy company (Cabbage Patch Kids) and video game pioneer; remember ColecoVision? In 1984, Jennel had become Coleco’s Director of Game Design and was putting together an art and design team. She offered me a job as head game designer and concept guy. She said I’d be her main go-to-guy and there was a lot of room for advancement. The pay (for 1984/1985) was staggering, and included a $10,000 signing bonus/moving stipend. I thought long and hard about that offer, but turned it down. A month or two later Jennell appeared at my Gen Con table in person to repeat the offer and encourage me to take it. Though very tempting, especially to a poor kid from Detroit and owner of a three year old start-up company, I remember waving my arms and saying, “What, and give up all of this?” I had a whopping six or seven products, including my latest release, the Heroes Unlimited RPG. Jennell sweetly smiled and said, “Kev, think about it. Talk to your wife. It’s a great opportunity and think of what we can do working together. I need to know your decision by the end of the month.”

I often wonder how different my life – heck, everyone I know, including you, our fans – would have been if I had taken that generous offer. Would I have become a pioneering video game designer? Would I have had to shut down the fledgling Palladium Books? I think so. Would I have discovered and licensed TMNT and Robotech and turned them into popular role-playing games? Probably not. There would have been no Ninjas & Superspies, Beyond the Supernatural or Rifts®, either! My whole life would have taken a very different turn. I would have moved from Detroit, Michigan, to Connecticut, and away from the Detroit Gaming Center, Alex M, Erick Wujcik, Julius Rosenstein, Matthew Balent, Kevin Long, Randy McCall, and other friends and family, as well as a host of influential people I was yet to meet, and experiences I was yet to have. Friends and moments in time that would help motivate, shape me, and encourage me along the path that I did take. It’s kinda wild to think about.

Jennell would go on to become an activist for transgender rights and do many important things in that arena. Like I said, Jennell Jaquays was an outstanding human being, and just one of the many incredible people who have touched my life over these past 67 years.

As for my choice to turn down the job at Coleco (as well as a job with comic book legend, Jim Steranko), I have no regrets. As Erick Wujcik would say, it’s all good. I love the path my life took, even with the ups and downs, twists and turns, tragedies and losses. I wouldn’t change a thing.

And just wait till you see all the exciting changes and products Sean and I have planned for Palladium’s future. Great stuff that will make you squeal with delight like a happy child on Christmas morning. You’ll start to see some of those plans and books manifesting throughout 2024. We thank you for your support and we’re glad to have you – our extended family and friends – with us for Palladium’s wonderful new journey. It’s gonna be a blast.
