UPDATE: My eBay Store for collectibles. Wow! The original art sold out and negatives have been blowing out the door. Alex and I will try to add some new art and negs by the time you read this Weekly Update. My store offers an eclectic range of Palladium collectibles including Robotech® RPG books and negatives, other out of print Palladium titles, first printings, toys, and a couple dozen one-of-a-kind negatives, proofreader copies of books, as well as toys and action figures and other odds and ends (http://stores.ebay.com/kevinstoys-artandcollectibles). However, many of these items sell within a few days after they get posted, so keep your eyes peeled. We continue to add Palladium collectibles and negatives at least once a week.

 

UPDATE: Titan Robotics is done and the PDF has been sent to all Kickstarter backers for their review and input. If you catch any spelling errors, spot any problems or have any constructive suggestions, please post them to the forums ASAP. We are sending the books to the printer very soon. The initial response has been raw excitement.

UPDATE: The Remastered and Bookmarked Rifts® Sourcebook One, Expanded and Revised PDF is done. The vastly improved PDF has been sent to Kickstarter backers and those of you who have purchased the PDF in the past via DriveThruRPG. You have been loving the new contents, index and clean look.

UPDATE: Feedback on Yin-Sloth Jungles, 2nd Edition. One of our stated goals is to give you the many titles you’ve been waiting for and this is one of them. I’m not sure what you are expecting, but freelance writer John Klinkel and I have done more than just tweaks to the stats. The Second Edition will look and feel like a new book to gamers old and new. There are vast improvements, revisions and additions including new maps and massive rewrites of each O.C.C.. In fact, I sent a handful of the expanded O.C.C.s out for review by select Palladium freelancers and insiders and they have gone bonkers over them. In addition to some excellent suggestions, comments have been: “The Witch Hunter now feels like a real Witch Hunter O.C.C.” “It all looks great.” “Another perfect fix.” “Great Fantasy Book.” “I want to see more.”

Auction! – Original Dungeons & Dragons art by Kevin Siembieda featured in the April 2nd Heritage Auction

With Hasbro’s plans for the Dungeons & Dragons® brand, a big budget D&D movie being released this weekend, and a coming D&D streaming series with Rawson Marshall Thurber involved – one of the hottest writer-directors in the business, Red Notice, Central Intelligence – D&D art value will only skyrocket from here. There are also persistent rumors of a D&D museum breaking ground in the future.

Whatever these six pieces of D&D artwork sell for this weekend, it will be a steal, and probably the lowest prices you will ever see again for D&D artwork of any kind. Take advantage of this art auction while you can. I wish I had done so when it came to comic book art.

Get in on the ground floor. If D&D art value follows the trend of comic book art, we could see its value increase 100x over the next few years. Before the now famous 1990s New York art auction featuring original Silver Age comic book art, a typical comic book art page sold for $35-$50. Immediately after that historic auction, the typical page of original Silver Age art jumped to $3,500-$5,000. Today, those same pages sell for $35,000-$80,000 depending on the comic, the year it was published, and the artist. And prices continue to climb.

D&D art of any kind is super-rare. Rarer than comic book art. Much of it has been lost over the decades or purchased by a small handful of savvy art collectors. Heritage Auctions is a prestigious auction company renowned as the premier specialists in the field of comic book artwork and collectibles. They are starting to branch out into game artwork and tell me they can never get enough D&D artwork, so they were happy to get some of my illustrations.

I thought most of my D&D art had been stolen and the rest sold off decades ago, but I happily came across an envelope of it. I figured I would let Heritage Auctions offer a few to see how they sell. If they do well, I’ll offer more in future Heritage Auctions. I created 400+ D&D illustrations for Judges Guild in 1979 and 1980. This makes my illustrations some of the earliest D&D artwork in existence! I would go on to do artwork for Steve Jackson Games, FASA, Tops Bubble Gum Cards, Noble Comics, Marvel Comics, local businesses, game clubs, and gaming conventions till 1984, even after starting Palladium Books in 1981.

Please Help a Palladium Stalwart

Hey folks, you may know Jeff Ruiz, a.k.a. NMI, as the Admin on the Palladium Books forums/website for, oh, the last 20 or 30 years now. What you may not know is he helps out in many ways behind the scenes: managing the forums, organizing G.M.s at conventions and Open Houses, and the Megaversal Ambassadors, as well as being a confidante and sounding board on projects few others even know about. We’ve also been there for each other through thick and thin. Jeff can be a bit rough around the edges at times, but he has a heart of gold, is a true Palladium devotee, and a friend. In short, he’s a largely invisible but important member of the Palladium community.

Jeff has struggled with a bone disease called Charcot and infected bones. He lost his lower left leg a few years ago. He lost his right leg and his job in January. He’s now on a fixed income and dealing with the high cost of physical therapy, medical related expenses, and needs to get a prosthetic for this latest amputation below the knee. He has been incredibly brave and inspiring on this difficult journey and needs our help.

Jeff has taken another courageous step by starting a Go Fund Me page and asking for help. Though he did not make it clear on his page, the $15,000 he is asking for is the amount needed to get a prosthetic for his second leg so he can become mobile again. It’s terrible being unable to walk and go out into the world. On behalf of our friend NMI, I’m letting our Palladium family know about his plight. We hate to ask during these uncertain times, but if you can afford to help out, please do so. Any donation is appreciated. Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store

I am adding new collectibles and Palladium negatives over the next several weeks, so check ‘em out. Alex and I will try to post new items on a regular basis, so check in every week or so to see what’s new.

One-of-a-kind Palladium Books negatives (special and rare collectibles). Negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House, Gen Con, and conventions, and are catching on as rare collectibles, unique in and of themselves. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. The plastic film negatives were then “ganged” on a massive sheet of Mylar, 16 pages per big sheet, and the printing plates were made from the negatives – everything white, printing black. We have been cutting them loose and making them available to you. I am only keeping a few dozen pages of negatives and a few complete books for myself, the rest are all being slowly offered to you, in no particular order.

  • Each is truly unique, attractive, and fun to have.
  • Own a piece of Palladium Books and RPG history you will treasure.
  • Each was used to print the very book you may have in your collection (1981-2004).
  • Each signed in silver ink by Kevin Siembieda, the founder and owner of Palladium Books. He is also the game designer and often the author or co-author of the book from which the negative originates. And some negatives bear his artwork.
  • Each signed negative comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
  • Each signed negative is a one-of-a-kind work of art (on rare occasions, two-of-a-kind if a page or section of pages were replaced or a second edition was made) that resembles woodcut art, and a very dynamic conversation piece.
  • Each signed negative is on a white board inside a clear plastic bag.
  • Negatives looks fabulous matted or framed! Fits in an 8×10 inch matt opening. Each neg is roughly 8½ x 11 inches.
  • Prices vary depending on the title, the art, and quality of the negative. Note: Many have scratches, or blemishes, and/or an opaque medium on the negative. Still, they look great and are a piece of RPG history. We recommend you carefully examine the photographs of each item to avoid disappointment.
  • We have been making the negatives available, in no particular order, for a number of years, and will continue to do so. However, cutting them loose, signing and bagging is a time consuming process.
  • Note: The negatives from the TMNT RPG, TMNT Adventures, and some Rifts® titles are already sold out. Moreover, the negatives from many titles were destroyed, so when you see one you like, get it when you can. Enjoy.

Original art – My Ebay store is one of the few places where you can find original artwork by me (Kevin Siembieda), Kevin Long, Charles Walton, and others, as well as one-of-a-kind negatives from classic Palladium books (they look awesome framed), and other Palladium memorabilia. Some are concept sketches, others are finished works of art, as well as a selection of prints and posters.

Closing Thoughts from Sean

Server Meltdown!

The last few weeks at Palladium have been crazy with tons of behind-the-scenes challenges. A-super-long-story-much-shorter, the server running our emails, forum, and website was in turmoil for the last two weeks. What was supposed to be an “upgrade” went very poorly on our server provider’s end. Wayne has spent the last three weeks applying fixes and communicating with them daily (which took him away from the Cyberworks Collection remasters, which I am completing). Last Thursday, after I updated the Titan Robotics Kickstarter about the release of the remastered Sourcebook One Revised, we found out that two weeks’ worth of emails, weekly updates, and forum posts had all been gobbled up by the void! Including the forum post that we created for Titan Robotics feedback.

Last Friday we took action which seems to have fixed things and restored most of the lost data. However, in the meantime, we didn’t receive a number of Kickstarter and BackerKit emails over the past 2+ weeks, and of the ones we did receive our email responses may not have gone through. Wayne spent Monday and Tuesday triaging the issues and responding to everyone we’ve received messages from. If you are reading this now and haven’t had a response to a recent message, please message us again through BackerKit and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We really appreciate your patience as we work through these issues, we are pedaling as fast as we can!

Upgrade Your Pledge – Now Automated

In another update regarding BackerKit, you asked and we listened, we have made it possible for you to upgrade your pledge manually, no need to message us. There was a slight delay in getting that working because BackerKit had users reporting a bug in that functionality, but they reported to us that the issue is resolved. PDF Delivery Troubleshooting

I’d like to urge all of you to make sure that you have received your files through DriveThruRPG; instructions for getting your PDFs were sent to your Kickstarter email.

If you haven’t received your Titan Robotics Preview PDF, the first step is to make sure you have done your BackerKit survey. If you aren’t sure you did it, DO IT AGAIN!

If you have done your BackerKit survey, and still don’t have your Titan Robotics preview, then please message us via BackerKit so that we can help you get your digital rewards through DriveThruRPG. This all has to be done manually, so please be patient.

If you didn’t get Sourcebook 1 remastered, first off make sure that you backed at a level that contains it as a reward; we’ve gotten multiple messages from fans confused on this point. If you are excited to get the Cyberworks Collection PDFs (Sourcebook 1 Revised, Sourcebook 2 The Mechanoids, and Shemarrian Nation) at a great price, this is nearly your last opportunity to upgrade your pledge through BackerKit – so please do so now if you want this resource.

 

Picking an Email Address

Oh, and one last housekeeping note, please make sure that your Kickstarter email is one that you actually check — and better yet, the one linked to your DriveThruRPG account — we’ve had a couple of people use Apple ID’s email obfuscating option when setting up their Kickstarter account via the iPhone app, and FYI if you use an option like that you will never receive our emails because it just enters a dummy email address that doesn’t forward to your real email!

 

The Titan Robotics Preview and Sourcebook 1 Remastered PDFs have been sent out!

With all of the bizarre server issues and delays, it felt really good to finally get books finished and released to you via DriveThruRPG, which seems to have gone pretty smoothly.

 

The Importance of Sourcebook 1 Remastered

There are some new features to keep an eye out for in the Sourcebook One Revised remaster and the Titan Robotics preview. Long-time fans will be excited about the updated standard these new titles represent for Palladium Books. It might seem simple from the outside, but making this happen has required some big changes in Palladium’s day-to-day processes and our software suite. It’s been challenging to work out a lot of the kinks, but these improved workflow and layout techniques are already paying off. I’m kind of a geek when it comes to this stuff, so I want to publicly thank Kevin, Wayne, and Alex for being so very flexible throughout this transition and for their willingness to try new things and adopt new methods. They’ve all embraced the possibilities and helped push the standard forward with their own great ideas!

So here are some things you will notice with Palladium products going forward, whether they are new releases or remastered versions of older products.

  • Table of Contents: These will generally be more detailed and accurate, with the Quick Find merged into the new Index at the end of each book.
  • Index: You have spoken and we are listening! This initiative actually started with an Index in BTS: Creature Feature. Instead of a Quick Find in the ToC, we are going for full-fledged Indexes at the end of our books. As we do future remasters, we will try to get you the best of both worlds by including helpful Quick Find items in the Index.
  • PDF Bookmarks: We are using a new process to build these, which should have satisfyingly detailed results.
  • Linked Text: In your PDFs, you should be able to click on page numbers in the ToC, Index, and throughout the main text, and it will jump you to the linked page.

We are also taking steps at multiple levels to make sure fewer misspellings and other errors slip into printed products, and to fix as many as we can when we do remastered editions. This includes a brief feedback period for new books that we crowdfund.

 

What’s Next?

Even with the slight delay to PDF book releases (we are a few weeks behind where I wanted to be right now), we remain on track to ship Rifts® Titan Robotics and the Cyberworks Collection to backers in June. With that in mind, we will be sending both books to the printer just as soon as they are finished – you should be getting the Sourcebook 2: The Mechanoids® remaster by the time you read this, with the Shemarrian Nation remaster soon after. So, if you have any feedback please post it to our forums, and if you haven’t done so yet DO YOUR BACKERKIT SURVEY!
